Mcgeough Trial Raises Justice Questions - Rnu

category national | crime and justice | press release author Monday March 08, 2010 17:00author by Republican Network for Unity - RNU Report this post to the editors

Preas Ráiteas ó RNU/RNU Press Release

“Are we seeing a test case, to be followed by others in which respected Republicans, who speak out against Stormont, are then threatened with decades old charges? Are the new supergrass laws and wing at Maghaberry part of this strategy? Are the new partnerships and constabulary boards making the constabulary accountable or Sinn Fein accomplices after the fact?”

REPUBLICAN NETWORK for UNITY (RNU)Cathaoirleach/Chairperson, DANNY MCBREARTY, commenting on the trial of, “Tyrone Republican Gerry McGeough said that this case raises justice questions that are deeply troubling”.

“Republicans have been repeatedly challenged that if they had an alternative to joining a British administration, they were free to do so and should stand in elections. Gerry McGeough is an example of what happens if anyone takes up that challenge. He stood as an Independent Republican against endorsing the RUC/PSNI, and while not winning a seat gained much respect in nationalist and Republican areas .The British responded by a planned arrest at the vote count, on charges trumped up from 1981, in order to prevent him from standing again.”

“It is ironic that Gerry McGeough should begin trial on charges of IRA membership and involvement in an IRA attack in 1981, just as some regarded by most journalists and British crown officials as the leaders and commanders of the IRA at that time, are silent about his case but join with the DUP in touting someone to head a compromised Stormont ministry over the crown courts and constabulary, who called the Bloody Sunday Saville Inquiry pointless and a waste of money. Is McGeough not entitled to any loyalty or political support from those who were Republican leaders and commanders at that time? Was silence on cases like that of Gerry McGeough bartered away as part of the deal for Stormont? ’

“McGeough’s case raises a number of issues. While entitled to release on license after two years if pronounced guilty by the Diplock court, he would then face the face the threat of having his license revoked by the Crown on any whim or pretext or secret evidence as was done in the case of Terry McCafferty.

Gerry was due to appear in court in Belfast today. However, just moments before
he left home for the 50 mile drive, he received a phonecall to say that
the court officers had made a "mistake" and overbooked the day's schedule.

Although, Gerry's appearance was arranged a month ago, this "mistake" means that
there is yet another delay in the proceedings of this more than three year long
saga on charges going back 35 years.

Observers believe that one of the goals of the British-Unionist-Sinn Féin axis
in this case is to keep Gerry McGeough tied down in this "legal" quagmire for as
long as possible in order to keep him politically inactive.

BOO-HOO! Ireland's only fascist of note (where has Justin Barrett gone?) has been inconvenienced by the NI courts service, he'd be out vilifying Protestants, Jews, liberals and gay people if it wasn't for the dreadful PSNI, what a shame!

General Eoin O'Duffy of Cumann na nGael was Ireland's first noted fascist. He wore a uniform in public parades and so did his popular followers. He died peacefully in 1944. Another noted Irishman attracted to fascist ideas (for a time at any rate) was the poet WB Yeats, but he never wore a uniform and didn't join O'Duffy's parades.

I don't know if McGeogh has ever wore a uniform. I glanced at a couple of issues of his weird Celtic nationalist magazine The Hibernian, now happily defunct for want of interested readers. The articles suggested a mishmash of garbled ethnocentric culture and historical hagigography rather than organized fascism.

I doubt whether Big Ears Justin Barret of Youth Defence ever wore a uniform more radical than an altar boy smock and dress.

You seem to think that wearing or not wearing a uniform is the qualifying criterion for whether or not somebody is a fascist, lol! Does this mean that Dublin Bus drivers and postal workers are fascists and Nick Griffin is not?

Clearly, the real way of judging whether someone is a fascist or not is by examining the views they espouse, Mr. McGeough's affiliation with a right-wing clerical-fascist publication called 'The Hibernian' and his condemnation of Sinn Fein for moving towards an equal rights agenda is surer evidence of his extreme right wing views rather than whether he ever wore a boy scout uniform or not!

I'd imagine Gerry and Eoin O'Duffy would find much to agree about in the kind of Ireland they'd like to see (no divorce, LGBT members of society well hidden), dig up Cardinal JC McQuaid and it'd be a real love-in!
