Memory and stuggle in Spain CNT activist Manuel Garcia was an invited speaker at this year’s Dublin Anarchist Bookfair. He spoke about the CNT’s successes in organising workers in the Andalucía region and about the efforts to rebuild the anarchist movement there. This interview about the legacy of the Franco dictatorship was conducted after his talk at Liberty Hall. Translation was kindly provided by José Antonio Gutiérrez Danton. KD: The talk you gave just now was excellent. But I want to ask you about a different, though connected, struggle that is ongoing throughout Spain at this present time. This is what is known as the movement for the recovery of historical memory. What can you tell me about this? |

Jump To Comment: 1 2I'm very grateful that somebody posted this online (and went to the effort of translating it for those who don't speak Spanish.) There is a huge hypocrisy in the tolerance of the right in political circles in Spain. Writers such as Pío Moa openly claim that the entire responsibility of the Civil War lies on the Left. Meanwhile when judge Garzón attempts to open an investigation into the crimes committed during Franco's dictatorship, the Partido Popular (the conservative party) tries every trick in the book to stop him. Spain is stuck with a pompous monarch (Juan Carlos II was appointed by Franco as his successor), who only draws support from Spaniards for restoring Democracy. To but it succinctly the left conceded far too much to the right in Spain during the transition, despite the right wing dominating the country for almost 40 years! Spain needs to do away with such appeasement and move back to the principles of the 2nd Republic.
The most celebrated account of the Spanish Civil Wavil War is "The Battle for Spain" by Antony Beevor.
The Spanish regard the book as being impartial...... by the survivors of both sides.
Antony Beevor also wrote what many regard as historical classics:
"Stalingrad"
And "Berlin the Downfalll".
In a bookshop all three books should be listed under "Horror".
