Press Release

The Save Our Cancer Services campaign is satisfied that the present government has no intention of changing its disastrous policy regarding Sligo General Hospital and believes that for the services to be restored to the hospital a change of government is required and this will occur following the next general election.

Not only is the government destroying our cancer services but it now appears that they are determined to downgrade Sligo General and all healthcare services in the North West. The campaign wish to express disappointment that Sligo Chamber decided to invite Mr Cowen to Sligo under the present circumstances especially as they had fully supported the efforts to save the cancer services in the past which Mr Cowen’s government took away.

To mark the visit, a demonstration to show solidarity with Sligo General Hospital, and all hospitals in the North West region and their staff and to give clear notice that the campaign to have our cancer services restored to the region remains strong and focused, it is intended to hold a silent vigil at the Clarion on Friday night to coincide with the Chambers event, at which Mr Cowen will be guest, commencing at 7.00pm to run for approx 1 hour

We also intend to have a letter of protest handed to Mr Cowen to draw to his attention the failure of the Minister for Health to honour all the promises she made regarding the provision of a bus for patients travelling for radiotherapy, the promise that all follow-up care would remain at Sligo and the promise that a hardship fund would be made available for those with particular difficulties meeting transport costs, child care cost etc. during their treatment.

All are welcome to join with us in this silent vigil to demonstrate against the health cuts and to show support for all the staff working to provide healthcare in the region
