Ireland in Crisis: Challenging the Consensus

category dublin | miscellaneous | event notice author Tuesday November 09, 2010 18:39author by The Ireland Institute - Venue: 27 Pearse Street, Dublin 2author email irelandinstitute at eircom dot netauthor phone 01 - 670 4606 Report this post to the editors

Lecture Series: Thursday 11th and 18th November, 8.00pm

The Ireland Institute believes that the debate to date has been dominated by a narrow consensus that does not question the structures within which the crisis is being played out. This consensus regards capitalism as the right and natural way to organise the economy and society: no alternative is admitted. In this worldview, competition, individualism, small government, privatisation, free trade and free movement of capital are self-evidently good and the means to economic success.

The Ireland Institute argues that the way capitalism organises the economy and society is at the root of the crisis. If we want real change, it will not be found in the solutions that are currently being proposed: more regulation of business and finance; reduction in the number of TDs; abolition of the Seanad; and updating of the 1937 Constitution.

Instead, the Institute considers that full democratisation of politics and the economy is the only way to change society so that, in the future, the common good of all citizens will be at the heart of policy. This means that all citizens must have a real share in decision making in Ireland, not just a vote every few years for one or other political elite.

This lecture series will challenge the consensus about the crisis.

I agree totally with the above. The media in this state have set the boundries for what kind of Govt this country can have.
One only has too look at the panels on theese media circus's any given night? Econimists, College lecturers, Bussiness rag editors JIM POWER?

It was only 2 years ago this oaf was tellin people the economy was rock solid.and a mortgage will set you free,if he had any self respect he would have thrown himself under a train but NO. Every bleedin Time i turn on TV hes on with his "F%£k the poor" mantra.

I watched a 90min show on rte with all walks of life in the audience. For a full 90min each vested intrest put there arguement why someone else should get shafted in the 15billion cut. Divide & Conquer
Not once was using the 50 billion being handed to a cartel of private speculator and Suited criminals in Anglo mentioned

Anytime Joe Higgins gets a chance to suggest given the bondholders some though love, he's laughed at.
"God Joe we'd get nothing done if your lot were in charge" with a roll of the eyes!

Anyway best of luck with the meeting. You are fighting a tsunami of ignorance, apathy and compliance.
I have little faith the Irish will do anything other than replace like 4 like at the next Election when ever its called
If what has happened cannot get people on to the streets. You really have your work cut out.
