"An interest rate above 2% will sink us" (Prof. Morgan Kelly In bitter, thick fog resembling the miasma hanging over the economic abyss that is now Ireland, some 300-400 protesters, yesterday, marched from the Cathedral through Eglington St and Shop Street to the Spanish Arch plaza voicing their anger, contempt and sense of betrayal for a government that has spectacularly lost the trust of its people but like a stinging, dying wasp is still hell-bent on forcing through a budget of unprecedented savagery that saddles and cripples the Irish people with the private gambling debts of rogue banks and a millstone "bailout" of usurious, ruinous interest rates from the IMF and EU. If pathetic fallacy captured the dark mood at the start of the march, it reflected it again at the Spanish Arch after the stirring speeches of Ann Irwin (Community Worker Coop), Brendan Gallagher (Galway Says No to Health Cuts), independent Galway City Councillor; Catherine Connolly, Conor Stitt (Free Education for Everyone) and Eamon Walsh (Hope for Disability) when brilliant sunshine bathed the plaza and Galway City - which brought to mind Johhny Nash's lifting song; I Can See Clearly Now.

Financial strategists Peter Boone and Simon Johnson in the New York Times state: Under the current program, we estimate each Irish family of four will be liable for 200,000 euros in public debt by 2015. There are only 73,000 children born into the country each year, and these children will be paying off debts for decades to come – as well as needing to accept much greater austerity than has already been implemented. There is no doubt that social welfare systems, health care and education spending will decline sharply.
If current policies continue, the calamity of the Irish banking system will lead to a much deeper recession and the consequences will be felt for decades. Watch also for further global financial disruption as this kind of deal starts to unravel.
What the great and the good really mean when they use the word is not that the financial fallout is manageable. It is that the people are managable. The assumption is that you can squeeze health and education, do almost nothing to create jobs, lock the economy into a downward spiral of cuts and depression, and there will be no long-term political or social consequence. Underpinning all the gambles on the banks is the ultimate gamble - on the infinite masochish and/or gullibility of the Irish people (Excerpt from Fintan O'Toole's; Enough is Enough,p.12).
Tuesday 7th December will see the imposition of yet another vicious budget to protect the wealthy 1% and make the rest of us pay for the crisis. The 1% network will be meeting up at the Wolfe Tone statue at 5.30pm to join the left bloc protest at the Dail at 6.
Now is not the time to wallow in masochism, wringing one's hands and lamenting on the ditch, a spectator to one's own immiseration?
It's fightback time! Join us!

Ronald Quinlan is reporting in today's Independent: Presidential hopeful Senator David Norris, using parliamentary privilege, managed to name five of the international financial institutions before the Cathaoirleach closed him down. Addressing the Seanad, the independent senator read the names of Aberdeen Asset Management (London Ltd), AGICAM, Aktia Asset Management, Aletti Gestielle SGR and Alliance Bernstein (UK) Ltd, on to the record before being ruled out of order by Cathaoirleach Pat Moylan. The five institutions are included on a list 80 international firms drawn from countries including Germany, France, Italy and the UK, which, Mr Norris says, are the bondholders of the State-owned Anglo Irish Bank. All of Anglo's senior debt will have to be repaid by the taxpayer as a result of its inclusion by the Government in the bank guarantee scheme. A copy of the list has since been forwarded to all members of the Dail and Seanad, and is now being circulated on the internet. The refused to allow it on the grounds that it wasn't of national importance.
"Now that is so absurd that it underlines the irrelevance of the Oireachtas; that business is being done over our heads by people who are not well disposed towards Ireland. It is absolutely disgraceful in my opinion," Mr Norris said.
"Nobody else will get screwed because nobody else will put up with it. My view always was: 'You want to put it up to us? We'll pull the plug. We'll bring the whole bloody thing [the EU] down, unless you give us this money to pay yourselves at zero interest or one per cent.' Six per cent is ridiculous. I mean, not only are they treating us like a money-laundering outfit for people who at the very least are stupid and greedy, ordinary Irish people, who haven't done anything wrong, will have to pay for it."
