Yesterday morning, I had the poster that appears in this clip of Giuseppe Conlon with the wording
"Remember Giuseppe Conlon and all Victims of Empire" confiscated by a Gardai inspector under some state security legislation.

I had been phoned by the Gardai about 11 pm the night before saying a friend of mine was in custody chargeed woth a pUblic Order offense and needed a lawyer and that he wouldbe appearing at the new court on Infimary Rd. I had been unable to get back to where I was staying as the city was closed down and had crashed on another friend's floor.

As I made my way to the court Thursday morning, a young Gard said she would not let me through her checkpoint with the sign. I asked if she could hang on to it and I would be back in 4o mins. She agreed.

After realsing I could not cross the road I returned to that checkpoint and the sign was gone. She pointed out the inspector that had seized the sign. I approached him and I said if ... read full story / add a comment

international / anti-war / imperialism / press release Monday May 02, 2011 - 14:13 by HOPI

Over the last year workers in Iran have struggled on several fronts. The subsidy cuts coupled with the crisis in world capitalism are driving living standards down for the majority of Iranians. Basic food stuffs are rising in price at a phenomenal rate, with bread rising a massive 25% and unsubsidised fuel increasing 7 fold. This is in a country with the third largest oil reserves in the world and the necessary refining abilities to produce cheap and affordable fuel for the entire population. The sanctions regime continues to undermine Iranian industry, robbing many workers of their jobs whilst the elite continue to amass great wealth. We stand with the Iranian working class fighting austerity and call for an end to all sanctions. We also call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners. ... read full story / add a comment

The event, held at Giuseppe Conlon House in Harringay, north London, kicked off at 2pm with information stalls and refreshments, space and time to network with others and music from the Bow Creek Ramblers Old Time String Band. People were also invited to sign a card from the gathering or write an individual letter of solidarity and support to Bradley Manning. A shrine representing Bradley Manning’s cell was also set up in the front porch of the venue, which was previously a Roman Catholic church. Imagine a free Bradley Manning…

As was the case with Gulf War 1, more serious resistance to the present wars on Afghanistan and Iraq has come from within the military in the United States & Britain than from the anti-war movements in civil society. A culture of solidarity is not evident in either countries anti-war movements. Military resisters often end up isolated and demoralised by anti-war movements that incite them to resist and then abandons them! 1. NATO bombing, no solutionJust eight years after they launched their shock-and-awe devastation of Baghdad and ten years after their invasion of Afghanistan, the same Western forces are pummelling yet another Muslim state with bombs, burning soldiers and tanks and killing civilians in the process.

Yet again, the claim is that their intervention is a question of moral principle. The passing of the UN security Resolution 1973 which authorised the bombing, was held up as an attempt to protect the Libyan rebels and stop Gaddafi brutally slaughtering his people. Why, then, did the same Western powers provide Gaddaffi with the arms that are now slaughtering the Libyan people? ... read full story / add a comment

The UN tonight has just passed a resolution on a no-fly zone over Libya. The resolution was pushed by France and there were 10 votes in favour and five abstentions.

Tonight Gaddafi is saying he will enter the last stronghold of the rebels the city of Benghazi to the East of Tripoli. It is being reported that he says his forces will show no mercy for the enemy. The question now is how fast will the no-fly zonet be implemented and how fast will Gaddafi move? ... read full story / add a comment
