Hercules C 130 num. BD 5379, US NAVY warplane at Shannon 8 Jan 2012

Twenty five peace activists were again far outnumbered by security forces at Shannon airport at the January peace vigil. Inside the airport three OMNI Air Troop carriers were under army and garda protection, at taxpayers expense. Garda and army personnel were not complaining of course, with their Garda overtime and army security allowances. The taxpayer may wish to question however, why Ireland is incurring such expenditure, in addition to waving many of the air navigation fees due to US military traffic over and through Ireland. This military air traffic is also breaching Irish neutrality on a daily basis. ... read full story / add a comment

Got this from LabourStart yesterday. This is very disturbing and sinister, and it's not happening in some remote, tin-pot, 3rd World dictatorship!! This is happening in Europe! In Greece, a European Union (EU) Member. And what are the EU, who are so quick to blabber and bleat on about human right's abuses in Libya, Iran, Syria, and other places safely removed from Europe, doing and saying about this? Surprise! Surprise! Nothing, as it's the EU and their austerity policies that have led to this, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if the EU is orchestrating this behind the scenes as an attempt to smash Protests by the People and the Workers against their failed austerity policies. ... read full story / add a comment

Very interesting discussion on Today PK (RTE Radio One) of how media misinformation, most of which originated during the 1981 H Block hunger strikes resurfaced during the release of state papers in 2012. Allegations that: - Bobby Sands told the Pope's representative that he would come off the hunger strike; - that Raymond McCreesh's family forced him to remain on hunger strike; - that the British agreed the substance of the prisoner's demands between the death of the fourth and fifth hunger striker; are discussed, by journalist Eamon Mallie, historian Eamon Phoenix and 1981 prisoners' spokesperson Danny Morrison. ... read full story / add a comment

A sketchy report on the Irish Anti-War Movement website states that a U.S. troop carrier plane was attacked and sabotaged at Shannon airport. From other sources I understand that that Omni used this aircraft as a spare and that was parked in a relatively remote area of the airport when disarmed a day or so ago by having its hydraulic or fuel lines severed. ... read full story / add a comment

Shell to Sea has revealed that RTÉ is being compelled to broadcast an apology ahead of Wednesday's Six-One and Nine O’Clock TV news programmes, as a result of RTÉ's biased coverage of Shell's attempt to build an experimental gas pipeline and refinery in Erris. In this specific case, RTÉ chose to ignore the facts as explained to them by Shell to Sea around technical issues concerning the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) investigation into the conversation Garda had about threatening to rape two women Shell to Sea campaigners they had arrested in April this year. RTÉ instead reported as fact the false suggestions of Justice Minister Alan Shatter, that part of the recording of the arrest had been deleted ... read full story / add a comment

Kevin Tracey is recuperating from an illness and while he is ill four national newspapers have taken a motion to have his libel case against them struck out. The reasons given by them which are all too common is striking out bona fide cases are that his case is unsustainable, bound to fail and/or frivolous or vexatious. There is no ground taken by them that Kevin Tracey’s case be struck out for “want of prosecution”, due to inactivity on the case due to his illness. This was the previous ground used for striking out six other cases taken by Kevin Tracey for damages against the State where it had been proven that Kevin Tracey had been wrongfully and maliciously prosecuted. see www.indymedia.ie/article/99369 ... read full story / add a comment

RTE broadcast an unforgivable and totally unjustifiable libel on Fr Michael Reynolds. They broadcast on air an untrue allegation that he fathered a child with a child in Africa - despite his offer to undergo a paternity test. He took them to court and rightfully to the cleaners. Now RTE are subject to a Broadcasting authority of Ireland enquiry as well as one undertaken by the Press Ombudsman, Professor John Horgan. Who has ridden over the ridge to to proclaim all that is holy in journalism? None other than Eoghan Harris, and his newspaper, the Sunday Independent. Harris wants Ed Mulhall, RTE's head of news, sacked (20th November). Harris has been attacking Mulhall for years. Who knows what for and who cares, just for the moment. ... read full story / add a comment

Thirty one malicious prosecutions of an innocent man, followed by perjury, cover ups, scandalous conduct by judges, barristers, solicitors, the Courts Service, the DPP's office, assaults by Gardaí etc - there was a long story to tell about the shameless legal and judicial system in Ireland outside our Houses of Parliament during the protest by Kevin Tracey, despite his illness. This story is one that could also come under the Rights and Freedom heading as well as under "Crime and Justice". Kevin Tracey has been the victim of criminal behaviour but he has also been deprived of his human rights and of freedom to live a normal life with his family in peace. Every day of the protest people ask "Why is this happening in Ireland?" ... read full story / add a comment
