Dublin 1913 to Dublin 2013

What have we learned? What changes can be made?

Dublin 1913: It was before World War I, Ireland had negotiated a form of Home Rule/self government but there was inequality with extremes in wealth and poverty, nationalism and British Rule created the environment for dissent and rebellion. James Larkin "Big Jim" represented the low skilled workers and William Martin Murphy, a Catholic businessman represented the newly forming middle class. William Martin Murphy owned the Irish Independent newspaper, and the Dublin United Tramway Company and was making inroads against the power of the former elites.

Article 40.6 of the Constitution of Ireland guarantees "the right of the citizens to assemble peaceably and without arms."

Speakers Corner We, The People claims this right.

There's a lot to say right now, a lot to discuss and we need to talk. We need to talk out loud and in public - we, the people.

This is a platform for inspiration, a chance to listen, to argue, to act!

"A rallying point for the disaffected!", as Connolly cried out!

How women are treated in Iraqi prisons. Full text at link.

When women in Iraq are arrested, they routinely go through three gruesome phases, starting with humiliation, followed by torture, and often ending with rape. The Children's Referendum is being held on Saturday, 10th November 2012.. There are lots of YES posters up but it seems few people really know anything about this referendum. What is it about? Indymedia have put this feature together to help people see and access some of the arguments.

The main article here is campaigning for the NO vote but there are also links to other articles which have taken a critical look at the new wording and what the potential ramifications are and these are linked here. We encourage readers to become familiar with them so that they can make a better choice on Voting Day. ... read full story / add a comment

Following two years under house arrest in Britain, in mid-June Julian Assange, the founder and editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks, sought refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London. Assange is facing extradition to Sweden on trumped-up allegations of “sexual molestation” and “rape” — which boil down to charges of unprotected sex in what were by all accounts consensual relations — but he rightly fears that this is simply a pretext to facilitate his extradition to the US. By granting him political asylum, Ecuador threw a monkey wrench into the process of handing Assange over to the US imperialists, who are intent on exacting retribution against Assange and WikiLeaks for having lifted the lid, however slightly, on the hideous crimes of US and British imperialism. ... read full story / add a comment

The government are currently implementing some rather disgusting changes to the way social welfare recipients are treated. The changes involve orwellian tracking and harassment of people through their mobile phones. These changes need to be resisted, as they are the thin edge of the wedge. Just because you have had no choice but to avail of your legal rights to a social welfare payment to put food on the table, does not make you a criminal and you should not be tracked like one. This is not a police state. ... read full story / add a comment
