President Barack Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into law on New Year’s Eve. The bill provides a massive $662 billion for the US war machine and makes unprecedented inroads into democratic rights, authorizing the US military to seize individuals anywhere in the world and hold them in a military detention facility indefinitely, without a trial or any other legal recourse. ... read full story / add a comment

We strongly condemn Thursday’s massacre at Sirnak in which 36 civilian Kurds were killed by Turkish air strikes. This year more than 4,500 people have been arrested under nebulous “terrorism” charges in Turkey, including dozens of journalists last week. This AKP-directed pogram, known as the KCK Case, began in 2009 against any Kurdish dissent in Turkey. Mayors, local councillors, journalists, human rights activists and Kurdish party workers are targeted. ... read full story / add a comment

I am going down to the Dáil to protest, I may be alone and I will stand alone... and I'll hold up a banner, perhaps people will show some honour, We should all go down to #OccupyTheDail on December the 5th at 12pm.

If we still have honour and we want to live in dignity on this land, we have to go down on December the 5th.
Whoever says it’s not worth it because there will only be a handful of people, I want to tell him you are the reason behind this, and you are a traitor just like the politicians or any cops who beats us in the streets.

Your presence with us will make a difference, a big difference!

A protest outside the Israeli Embassy sponsored “Israeli Film Days” in Temple Bar turned acrimonious this evening when Gardai broke up a peaceful demonstration by pro-Palestinian activists outside the venue. Citing Section 21 of the Public Order Act, Gardai forcibly removed around sixty activists from the area outside the venue, Filmbase, on Curved Street in Temple Bar, while others were removed from inside the venue. ... read full story / add a comment

Filmbase in Dublin will be hosting a series of “Israeli Film Days” sponsored by the Israeli Embassy between November 24th and 27th. The IPSC is calling on our supporters to mobilise in opposition to this attempt to use “culture” to whitewash Israeli apartheid and human rights violations against the Palestinian people. In 2005 a director of the Israeli foreign ministry stated that “We see culture as a hasbara [propaganda] tool of the first rank, and do not differentiate between propaganda and culture.” Filmbase has sold out to the Israeli regime by offering itself as a vehicle for this propaganda. It has sacrificed the power of culture to the culture of power. The IPSC will be staging a series of protests and leaflettings outside the venue over the course of the festival. If you can make it along to any or all of the mobilisations then please do, it is very important that we do not allow this attempt at normalising the abnormal to happen without raising our voices in opposition. ... read full story / add a comment

Thirty one malicious prosecutions of an innocent man, followed by perjury, cover ups, scandalous conduct by judges, barristers, solicitors, the Courts Service, the DPP's office, assaults by Gardaí etc - there was a long story to tell about the shameless legal and judicial system in Ireland outside our Houses of Parliament during the protest by Kevin Tracey, despite his illness. This story is one that could also come under the Rights and Freedom heading as well as under "Crime and Justice". Kevin Tracey has been the victim of criminal behaviour but he has also been deprived of his human rights and of freedom to live a normal life with his family in peace. Every day of the protest people ask "Why is this happening in Ireland?" ... read full story / add a comment

The Occupy movement has grown steadily in the past 4 weeks in Ireland. It is part of the global Occupy movement. As to what it is about is best summed up by the OccupyGalway statement:

Occupy Galway is part of the international movement against austerity measures imposed on ordinary people around the world. We are all part of the 99% who, so far, have been subject to economic inequality and social injustice from the 1% who control the world's resources. We, the 99% demand:

1 - The removal of the IMF and ECB from all Irish financial affairs;
2 - That the national debt imposed on Irish people from the bank bailouts be lifted;
3 - The return of Irish resources (gas, oil, forestry) to the people of Ireland;
4 - Real particpatory democracy.

international / rights, freedoms and repression / press release Thursday October 27, 2011 - 11:42 by Maryam Namazie
76 secularists and human rights campaigners, including Mina Ahadi, Nawal El Sadaawi, Marieme Helie Lucas, Hameeda Hussein, Ayesha Imam, Maryam Jamil, Maryam Namazie, Taslima Nasrin, Farida Shaheed, Fatou Sow, and Stasa Zajovic have signed on to a Manifesto for a Free and Secular Middle East and North Africa.

In light of the recent pronouncements of the unelected Libyan Transitional Council for ‘Sharia laws’, the signatories of the manifesto vehemently oppose the hijacking of the protests by Islamism or US-led militarism and unequivocally support the call for freedom and secularism made by citizens and particularly women in the region.

Secularism is a minimum precondition for a free and secular Middle East and for the recognition of women’s rights and equality. ... read full story / add a comment

"it shall be for the house (Dail and Senate) to determine the appropriate balance between the rights of persons and the public interest..." Okay this is pretty basic - A referendum is needed every time a government wishes to change our constitution - this is because the constitution theoretically exists to protect people from the excesses of any government i.e. any elected government can only work within the confines of what the constitution sets out. This means the constitution belongs to the citizens (i.e. us) not the Government. Whatever government is in power has to get our permission to change it. Lots of things in our constitution are outdated and need to be changed BUT and it's a big BUT we should be really careful of letting it be changed for trivial issues. ... read full story / add a comment

According to Enda Kenny, the Irish people are dumb, maleable and stupid. When asking people to support a referendum vote on something as important as changing the Irish Consitution, it is simply not enough to say “This is about fairness” and hope as he obviously does that people will simply sit back in satisfaction and accept his words. ... read full story / add a comment
