The Right2Water campaign is shocked by the jailing of five water protesters for contempt of court today (Thursday, 19th February). Bernie Hughes, Derek Byrne and Michael Batty were all sentenced to 28 days in prison while Paul Moore and Damien O’Neill were given 56 days each.

Right2Water representatives were in court for the sentencing, which they described as “an unnecessary and provocative decision brought about by an unfair water charge that has already been rejected and cannot work.” ... read full story / add a comment

“No one deserves to live like this”
A poster I came across on a billboard recently, juxtaposed by the wasteland where one of our block of flats used to sit, where working class families used to live happily, side by side, before they were all socially cleansed from the area, and for what? Already a year has passed since they were pulled down to the ground, and all we have to show for it now is a lousy carpark—desperate!

Currently, there are over 80 unused empty units in Tom Kelly Flats, some of which have been empty for over five years or more, 3 and 4 bedroom flats too. ... read full story / add a comment

Eight housing activists were today acquitted by the Dublin Criminal Court of Justice, relating to a case spanning back seven months ago, when the charge against them of trespass was thrown out of court.

All eight accused had initially set about into investigating whether or not it was feasible to open up, and re-do, one of the 80 unused flats on Charlemont Street, that had been lying empty for over two years or more. ... read full story / add a comment

The WSM have written the following article which neatly sums up the various things happening in the news today and brings them together.

This morning squads of Garda around Dublin mounted dawn raids on the houses of water charges protesters over a sit in 3 months ago in Jobstown. At the same time across the city bankers and other speculators named in the HSBC Geneva Private Bank leaks slept soundly in their beds knowing no one was going to be knocking down their door. If you want to understand the nature of power the contrast provides an excellent example.

After the relatively large turn-out to the Anti-Water charges protests over a week ago on Saturday the 31st, the government is worried that their propaganda hasn't worked as well as it should so in response they have launched a new dirty tricks campaign to discredit the Anti-Water charges campaign. They are using the same strategy as that used in the Corrib Gas issue in Mayo over the past decade where the strategy was to criminalise the protests in the eyes of the public. ... read full story / add a comment

After the election victory of Syriza in Greece on Sunday 25th Jan, what are the chances they will implement their new anti-austerity programme and does this mean we can all follow their path. Is this a return of democracy -i.e. the will of the people. And can the rest of us follow them?

The short answer is seems to be no. ... read full story / add a comment

The Dublin local groups are planning to all meet up in the City Centre, Please join the protests and keep the pressure up. The temporary lower charges introduced by the government will be withdrawn after the next election and all waivers and allowances will be abolished if they privatise Irish Water which IS their plan. They later plan to charge for waste water! This is on the cards. We must stop abolish these charges and stop this disgraceful act. ... read full story / add a comment

Drawing on their experiences of the Corrib Gas controversy, but also other community struggles in Ireland a further afield, it will be given by film-maker Risteard Ó Domhnaill (maker of The Pipe and currently working on Atlantic) and Rossport farmer Monica Muller. ... read full story / add a comment

This is an extremely important story and should be the final wakeup call to the public at large over the real dangers of weedkillers and GM crops. Even though the study applies to the USA, and generally we have GM food labeling, our animal feeds very likely contain significant amounts of GM crops. Also Roundup itself even on ordinary crops is used widespread both in agriculture and in gardens. It is highly likely we are all regularly exposed to residues of this weedkiller, although in all likelihood at the moment this is probably more prevalent in the USA where the situation is a lot worse. However, there are continual efforts all the time to introduce GM crops into Ireland and both FF and FG have given their support to the corporate lobbyists promoting its use. Hopefully news like this just might stop it in its tracks but it won't do anything for the tens of thousands of families already affected by autism ... read full story / add a comment

On Thursday night RTE Primetime presented what many have described as a 'regime broadcast', an utterly transparent hatchet job of the anti-Water Charges campaign. This featured, supposedly, an anonymous water meter installer describing being accosted by knife, hatchet, baseball bat, and golf club wielding maniacal protesters – the sinister fringe. The core message transmitted in the program was 'you can protest, but don't protest effectively'. If you watched it (link below), what did you think? ... read full story / add a comment
