The biggest Protest yet against the US
Military use of Shannon Airport took place on Saturday 12th October.
After a pretty standard protest – (some pushing and shoving at the
entrance to the airport, speeches, an open mic, a funny standoff
between a group of public representatives and the Police, music,
chanting, a die-in) – a number of activists took down the fence
marking the airport perimeter and initiated a mass Trespass on the
grass beside a runway. read full story / add a comment

First I have to say that many of us here on this Island heard the EZLN when, at the beginning of 1994 they pointed out to the world that the third world war had ended and that the fourth world war had begun. We are celebrating today the victory of Mexican farmers and Civil Society in their recent conflict with the Mexican Government. read full story / add a comment

Last Sunday, the 7th of July, a crowd of 100,000 gathered at the Salthill Air Show. Treated to a display of military prowess billed as the 'greatest free show in Europe', the crowd 'ooh'd' and 'aah'd' as Hercules helicopters, F-15s and a B1 bomber streaked overhead. Defending the air show, The Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, who opened proceedings, announced that allowing military aircraft to entertain crowds was not a breach of Irish Neutrality read full story / add a comment

The Public Order Act, passed in 1994 and subsequently one of the more draconian and controversial pieces of Irish legislation, has come back into the public eye with the passing of amendments related to "trespassing" in the dying days of the Dáil. Activists have certainly been aware of this Act as it stands, as it's one of the most effective weapons of the Gardai when confronted with any demonstration. They are directed towards members of the Traveller community - who have called a protest on May 2nd read full story / add a comment |
