Marks and Spencer's won the The Queen's Award For Enterprise Innovation in 2000 for the development of "Secret Support" lingerie. It has been said that every woman in England used to own at least one pair of M&S knickers, because if she didn't buy them herself, her mother would.
In Ireland, the company has operated successfully for a number of years, although a 1990's plan to place a Marks and Spencers store in close proximity to every Dunnes Stores outlet in the country came to nothing. A recent round of store closures and job losses in Britain has not had an effect on M&S shops in Ireland, since the company is so successful here.

However, activists in Britain are often surprised by the lack of awareness in this country of the nasty side of Marks and Spencers. It's not just the lingerie that has "secret support". read full story / add a comment

In a recent article in the Irish Times, Young Green Party chairperson Barra Rowntree expressed his disappointment that the large Dublin Gaza protest had been disrupted by "a small group of fanatics".

Speaking after attending the protest, Roantree said the fact some people had used the opportunity to burn the Israeli flag and dress children in military fatigues was "not only unhelpful, but utterly contradictory to the aims of the world peace movement": "Those who burn flags and glorify violence only fan the flames of the tragic conflict in the Middle East." read full story / add a comment

Following widespread anecdotal reports and some media reports of the Palestinian Authority unleashing its security goons in the West Bank to suppress the spontaneous demonstrations in support of Gaza following the Israeli attack - I experienced a smidgeon of this in Hebron last Sunday week when a uniformed PA person attempted to stop my videoing - I decided to attend yesterday's demo in Ramallah organised by Fatah and the Peoples Committees to delve further.

Today up to 3,000 people march in Dublin in solidarity with the people of Gaza who have suffered a week of Israeli air-strikes that have killed over 430 people and left over 2,000 injured, and who now face the threat of a full scale ground invasion. The protest called for an immediate end to Israeli attacks and war crimes, and an end to the criminal siege on Gaza. During the course of the protest news came via a link up to Gaza that the Israeli military had begun firing artillery along the Gaza border. The protest was loud, colourful and angry. read full story / add a comment
