I don't know how the government in all the different countries that we find ourselves in are acting when it comes to the Bird Flu, but I am sure that the situation here in Aotearoa (New Zealand) is in no way original. There was a mass send out of material a few months ago to all households on the both islands. In this material one would find information about the pandemic and how to protect oneself and one's family. There are regular announcements in the media regarding the flu, its symptoms, vaccinations, etc. I have no idea of how much this campaign is costing the people of this country. A campaign which as far as I can see is only creating more fear in a time when that is the last thing we need. Fair enough, if the Bird Flu was a pandemic, then it might be worth the effort. At this stage though there is no need to be afraid. And please, feel free to contradict me on this, educate me and enlighten me! read full story / add a comment

I’ve reflected hard on John Water’s latest ‘The Chorus’ column for Village (27 May – 3rd May) and concluded, on balance, that the guy has a gift for satire unparalleled in Ireland. ‘Why redistribution can help the wealthy’ (what a hoot!) is a piece that pretends to work its way, via a series of hilariously OTT caricatures and studiedly faux-academic analyses, to Waters’ windingly funny conclusion to his column:

Summary:Leaving Israel after a ten-day sojourn there, I make the following calls to Israel. Release Vanunu, End the occupation of Palestine, respect their rights, dismantle the Wall, stop the daily oppression, allow people from different regions to meet one another, work for peace by mutual respect, not unilaterally, enter into dialogue with the new authority.
To the Palestinian people: use all non-violent means to resist the unjust occupation and oppression
To the international community: Demand an end to occupation, support the Palestinian non-violent resistance, restore aid, do not be silenced by fear of being labelled anti-Semitic.
To all Israelis and Palestinians: try to build mutual friendship and peace. I appeal to those of you who already work together non-violently for peace and justice to continue with your great work read full story / add a comment

A recent medialens alert highlighted the cartoon nature of a news report/one-sided smear on Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.
John Pilger described it as “one of the worst, most distorted pieces of journalism I have ever seen” - in which, Channel 4’s Washington Correspondent Jonathan Rugman smeared Chavez in "a piece seemingly written by the US State Department".

I come from a long line of savers, women and men who believed that a rubber band or piece of string or jar lid should not be thrown away as it will come in handy some day. The fact that being a saver meant full drawers and stuffed shelves didn’t dissuade us, nor the fact that because of the clutter we couldn’t find the thing we saved when we finally needed it. Saving is ingrained. In our case, saving is almost genetic. Recycling was an easy concept for us. “Waste not. Want not” Recycling is just a more communal variation on saving with the advantage of no clutter.

This is the first chapter of Book II.

A lot of ground covered here, there's a cast of billions. George Bush makes an appearance, so does Tony Blair and even Jesus himself has a part to play. There's psychology, sociology and an examination of fear. Phase space is looked at (in a non visual fashion) and a better plan to end Global Terrorism is suggested to GWB than the one he currently uses. Likens apathy to phase space. read full story / add a comment

The appointment of Mr Gay Byrne as Chairman of the Road Safety Authority must be a welcomed appointment if only to see in time a respected public figure walk away from a charade that appears to have more emphasis placed on securing revenue rather than saving lives. We all know Gaybo will give it his very best, once what he is doing or saying finds a pleasurable interest and approval by those in the corridors of power. Some like him, some hate him but one thing is sure, if Gay walks away then we can safely assume that there is something rotten and wrong with the institution and the bodies surrounding it that alligiedly place the interest of every citizen of the state as aa priority above all else. read full story / add a comment

In this article the case is made that once the disastrous consequences of Climate Change and Peak Oil begin to bite that Great Britain will almost certainly re-invade the whole of Ireland again to gain access to our land and agricultural resources to help either supply the mainland and also to transfer some of it's population here. The timeline for this could be within the next decade or so. And why Ireland? Quite simply because we are so near. Why not? And how ironic it would be if this happened to occur in 2016? read full story / add a comment
