The Morning Show on Newstalk 106 (a Dublin news and current affairs station) are doing a May Day feature tomorrow morning (Thursday, April 1st) from 10am. They will be discussing all aspects of the May Day protests planned throughout the day, and the traditional meaning of May Day, including the traditional May Day March on May 1st organised by the Dublin Council of Trade Unions (DCTU) , but which was cancelled this year because O'Connell Street was to have been closed for the now cancelled concert (maybe you might reconsider your decision now DCTU in light of the changed circumstances?). I encourage everyone to not only tune into Newstalk 106FM from 10am tomorrow morning, but to also participate in the debate by phoning in, texting and emailing. read full story / add a comment ![]()

O'Connell Street traders have objected to the disruption that would be caused as the street would need to be closed for up to 7 days to erect and then dismantle the stage. The Phoenix park is obviously out because all the noise might disrupt the dignitaries nin farmleigh. Looks like the "Day of Welcomes" is gonna be off limits to people both from within the current EU and from the accession countries (due to restrictions of the freedom of movement for eastern Europeans) This decision will possibly have an impact on the level of political protests that will take place on May 1st read full story / add a comment ![]()

Early copies of Saturday's Independent reveal that Ireand's biggest selling daily has leapt into the media hysteria that is building up around Mayday. The Independent is the latest paper to join in the frenzy, in the wake of an anonymous smear campaign in the tabloids, which sought to link protestors to terrorism and football hooligans. read full story / add a comment

One of the main groups organising protests against Dublin's EU summit in May has criticised an anonymous smear campaign aimed at undermining the right to protest. In a statement issued today, Dublin Grassroots said "For the past few weeks the national media has been drip-fed with anonymous allegations claiming that protestors are only interested in violence and destruction." read full story / add a comment

"Garda Inspector Ray McHugh revealed the gardai are being advised by police forces around the globe on how to beat the [May 1st]anarchist menace." - KEN MURRAY Sunday Mirror, March 21, 2004. I wonder is it possible that someone (!) who has the time to work with the Indymedia Collective Editorial Team could assign themselves the task of collecting the names and 'journalism' of outrageous anti-democratic no-research-necessary corporate-nonsense journalists for the purpose of inviting them to a debate in public on the theme of Journalism And Democracy. read full story / add a comment

Indymedia Ireland to establish a support group and physical Indymedia centre for Mayday.
Last week two major steps were taken in the development of Indymedia in Ireland. These steps were prompted by two major events coming up in Ireland in the next few months, the accession of the 10 new EU members on May 1st during Ireland's EU presidency and the visit of George Bush to Ireland on June 25th for a US-EU summit. These events present a great challenge and a great opportunity for Indymedia. We can be sure that a large number of people from all over the world will come to Indymedia to find out what's really happening behind the facade of the corporate and state propaganda machines. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Ireland on Sunday: Commentary on Front Page and Feature by Deirdre Tynan.
Discussions about the role of corporate media usually end up being esoteric discussions about the subtle misdirection and bias exposed by Chomsky and Hermann. Sometimes though the corporate media just lets it all hang out and tells such huge porkies that it's hard to believe. Perhaps the most "skilled" example of the art of complete and utter lies that has sullied our eyes is the work of "journalist" Deirdre Tynan and her editors and publishers at Ireland on Sunday. read full story / add a comment

Activists from the Dublin Grassroots network are calling for a European day of action in Dublin on Saturday, May 1st, as the highlight of a weekend of action from Friday April 30th, to Monday May 3rd. These days of action will focus on symbols of all that is wrong with the EU as it currently stands: militarism, neo-liberalism, fortress Europe and the EU police state. We are inviting people from all over Europe, and the world, to join us in Dublin on Mayday to show our leaders that their agenda for EU integration, driven by the wealthy and powerful, will face resistance. We will also be using the days of action to highlight local issues and campaigns which are linked to the broader problems of corporate globalisation and the EU. read full story / add a comment |
