Today members and supporters of Dublin Shell to Sea gathered the top of Grafton Street to distribute €540 billion ‘commemorative bank notes’ to members of the public, symbolising the cost to the exchequer of the extraordinary giveaway of Ireland’s oil and gas reserves. This was part of a national Shell to Sea day that saw leafletting in 8 other towns and cities around Ireland as well as Dublin. read full story / add a comment

Egypt's on Fire: The winds for democratic change are strongly blowing in that country to dislodge US/Israeli backed traitor Hosni Mubarak and his Obama picked replacement, Omar Suleiman (also, "Israel's favourite Egyptian", Robert Fisk). Yesterday afternoon in Dublin, Egyptians, Arabs, internationals and Irish people of conscience assembled outside the Egyptian Embassy in Clyde Road, Ballsbridge to give the ambassador and all who care to listen a strong message that Mubarak and Suleiman will no longer be endured or tolerated and both have to go and be replaced with true democracy. Judging from the shuttered and closed blinds of the Embassy windows, denial held sway and the blind eye and deaf ear was being turned to the trumpeting elephant inside.? read full story / add a comment

Regional TUCs are expecting 300,000 to converge on central London on March 26. It should be an interesting day. While stewards are being recruited in liaison with police to stop any repeat of what happened to Millbank, there’ll be thousands of us with other ideas. If an NUS demonstration of 30,000 can accidentally demolish the Tory Party HQ, what might 300,000 achieve? In January, anarchists from around Britain met in Manchester to form a ‘network of networks’ called ‘Network X’. It was agreed to mobilise for direct action on March 26. “This is a major step forward for the anarchist movement,” quipped Class War’s Ian Bone, “being the first time anarchist groups have agreed to a central command since Barcelona in 1936.” A kaleidoscope of groups, many of recent invention, is planning street theatre, effigies and spectaculars for the big day. read full story / add a comment

On Thursday 20th January An Bord Pleanála announced their decision to
approve the Shell high pressure raw gas pipeline.
This is the last chance to resist the plan by the Irish Government,
state bodies and Shell to force their will on communities and on the country
as a whole, regardless of proper process, economic sense, people’s safety,
environmental laws and human rights. Whilst the people of Ireland are being
crippled by the cuts in public services and forced in to huge EU and IMF
debt, the great gas giveaway is the elephant in the room that could be our
solution. The unjust deal can be renegotiated as we have successfully seen
in other countries. The people of Ireland should have a say in how we
sustainably manage our natural resources. The struggle against Shell is a

Indymedia UK article on Mark Stone , aka Mark Kennedy , a police officer who infiltrated the Nottingham activist scene in 2001 . Kennedy/Stone admitted his role after being confronted . UPDATE: Stone goes rogue and reveals details of operations and "outs" other officers. A police chief with detailed knowledge of the deployments of undercover officers in the protest movement said Kennedy's breach of protocol could lead to the "relocation of a considerable number of people". The UNITE trade union, the second largest union in the Republic of Ireland has called on all working people to vote for a left wing government in the general election likely to be held in March. “Workers should use their vote in the upcoming general election to bring about a left-wing government for the first time in the history of the state,” said Jimmy Kelly, Regional Secretary of Unite the union. read full story / add a comment

Today’s peace vigil at Shannon on 9 Jan 2011 was not a celebration but a commemoration of events that have been occurring over the past 11 years in Afghanistan and Iraq in which the United States waged unlawful and unjustified wars killing hundreds of thousands of people. It also commemorated and offered condolences on behalf of the many prisoners who were kidnapped, imprisoned without trial and in many cases tortured in Guantanamo and elsewhere. January 2011 also marks the 20th of the US led Gulf War in 1991, which led to the deaths of over two million Iraqi people in the decade up to 2001. read full story / add a comment

They are successful, confident, down to earth people. Several hundred people took part in "A Spectacle Of Defiance And Hope" in Dublin on the night of Friday 10th December to protest the way the government have cut funding to vital community services. Janice Feighery a co-ordinator at an after school computer program for young people said “Community programmes are being devastated by the cuts. Our work with young people is strangled by lack of funds." The spectacle draws to a close the week of protests against the austerity budget. read full story / add a comment

Julian Assange may be imprisoned but Wikileaks is still operational, still releasing the information that Obama and Clinton do not want us to see. False rape charges have been filed against Assange in Sweden so that he might be extradited to there and then on to the US where he would likely face life imprisonment. More likely death as its very easy to arrange murder inside a federal prison. Those who have collaborated with the attempts to close down Wikileaks have learned there is a price to pay. In the next few weeks, more than likely An Bord Pleanála will be announcing their decision on whether to grant permission to Shell to build the onshore section of the Corrib Gas pipeline. Below is a review of the reopened oral hearing that ran from the 24th of August until the 1st of October in 2010 in Belmullet. Again (this is the fourth convening of an oral hearing), opponents of the Corrib Gas Project made lengthy and comprehensive submissions on why they are opposed to the project. Around the world countries have been betrayed by their politicians who have worked hand in glove with their capitalist partners to systematically destory each economy and then to hand them over to a private financial elite composed of bankers, investors and speculators and other parasites.
From Iceland to Lativa to Greece to Ireland the Financial Coup has taken place. It has already long ago taken place in such countries as the USA where big capital and big finance captured their governments long ago where corporations like Goldman Sachs have their own people in government dictating the bailouts. But many other countries are on the list. News is coming in that upwards of thirty students have occupied the Department of Finance in the centre of Dublin with several hundred supporting them in the streets outside. Tens of thousands of students are demonstrating as part of the USI protests against plans to introduce fees, these students carrying out the occupation appear to have broken away from the main demonstration which is taking place around the corner in Merrion square. read full story / add a comment

A larger than expected crowd turned out for last night’s 1% Network Treasure Hunt around the exclusive Aylesbury and Shrewsbury roads in Dublin. In 2006 Shrewsbury Road was the 6th most expensive address in the entire world and it remains exclusively populated by the richest of the 1% who own 34% of the wealth in Ireland. read full story / add a comment

Amid the hum of words spoken and written here in Ecuador and further afield about the events of Thursday, September 30, two are easily discernible: “coup” and “democracy”. Yet it can be argued that neither concept had much to do with what unfolded on that day. It would be easy to say that the convulsions that gripped Ecuador on that day were just more of the same. This is a country, after all, that has deposed three elected presidents by different means (none of them impeachment), and at one stage could count 9 different presidents in 10 years. read full story / add a comment |
