There are a few ways in which International Women's Day can be approached. It can be ignored. This is what mostly happens in the mainstream media. Unlike Valentines Day and Mothers Day, cards aren't given and presents aren't bought. With no profit to be made out of it, the day is not exactly one that jumps out and grabs the attention. read full story / add a comment

According to Wikipedia International Women's Day started in the States in 1909, spread to Copenhagen and other parts of Europe and by 1911 was being celebrated by over 1 million people. Its an official holiday in many countries throughout the world and though it doesn't have this status in Ireland it is being marked by a number of groups and events over the next few days. Heres a selection from the events listed on Indy's Events Calendar.

On the Thirtieth anniversary of the overthrow of the Shah in Iran, Azar Sheibani looks at how Iranian women have defied the reign of misogynist terror. Full text of the article at the url below. Imperialism’s sabre-rattling against Iran has prompted the Tehran regime to intensify its suppression of grass-roots progressive movements. The regime uses the threat of war to claim that radical and progressive movements – like the women’s, workers’ and students’ - are in league with imperialism, are somehow ‘fifth columnists’. Harsh repression inevitably follows. The irony is that the experience of two imperialist invasions in the region has shattered any illusions among women and other social movements about the so-called ‘liberation’ on offer from US-led intervention. The barbaric consequences for the women of Afghanistan and Iraq are eloquent testimony to that. Thought me and my friends were the only ones until you came on 5Live the other day. Never thought my generation would ever come with such a creative group. So long as you are not anti-Muslim, I'm with you. Standing up against faith based "justice" is brave and necessary. Thank you for your campaign. You have to win this for our children. These are only some of the thousands of messages we have received from people in Britain and across the world in support of One Law for All Campaign against Sharia Law in Britain since our launch on December 10, 2008 – International Human Rights Day. In less than a month, the campaign has mobilised the support of many well known personalities and organisations and gathered over 5,000 signatures. Call For End To Sharia Courts After Report Shows Widespread Injustice Press Release December 17, 2008 A new report* showing that Muslim women are discriminated against and encounter gross bias when they subject themselves to Sharia adjudications was welcomed today by The One Law for All Campaign, which is supported by a variety of organisations and individuals. * http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7783627.stm The campaign’s spokesperson Maryam Namazie said: ‘This research reinforces our own findings that Sharia Councils and Muslim Arbitration Tribunals are discriminatory and unfair. Here is an extract from an interview with Maryam Namazie who argues that Political Islam makes abolishing the Death Penalty more difficult. Full text at link. IPS: Your organisation campaigns for the separation of religion and state. In Muslim countries, is it religion, more than anything else that prevents the abolition of the death penalty? Maryam Namazie: The death penalty exists in quite a large number of countries and is a form of social control still exercised by states, not all of them ruled by Islamic laws (I wouldn't call them Muslim countries any more than I would call Britain and France Christian ones).
