Concerned Citizens of Highfield in Limerick turn out to defend their natural heritage. Locally known as Chicken tree 1 + 2, are the old Monterey Cypress trees, the Giant Redwood and Turkey oak tree face possibly being felled.

Felling of younger trees occurred Friday and Monday on site, an act which is understood to be directly in breach of condition 6 of this developments Bord Planala planning permission (see condition 6 in full below).

Following today's pressure from these local residents and subsequent mediation with the developer and the council, a commitment have been given by the developer that all felling will cease until documents are sent to council. The residents expect the developer to honour this commitment.

More updates to follow.

DEFENCE MINISTER Willie O’Dea was at the centre of another embarrassing gaffe last night after it was claimed he was forced to pull out of the launch of the biography of the famed Limerick IRA man Sean South of Garryowen.

The minister, who is also from Limerick, withdrew from the event claiming he did not realise who the book was about when he agreed to do the launch. The biography by Des Fogerty is entitled Sean South of Garryowen.

In Limerick city today members of Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) wearing little more than fake blood whilst posing ‘dead’ inside two meat trays covered in clear plastic with signs reading ‘Meat Is Murder’ demonstrated to crowds of passersby and onlookers that if you eat meat you’re eating flesh. We also had other activists distributing leaflets whilst another showed PETA’s ‘Meat Your Meat’ on a portable lap-top shocking many people and showing the inside of the slaughterhouse. read full story / add a comment

In order to force wild animals to perform stressful and often painful acts, trainers use metal bullhooks, whips, muzzles and electric prods. These horribly cruel training methods are commonly used in Irish circuses all over the country. This is part of ARAN’s ongoing campaign country wide to show the public that, animals in circuses have being taken from the wild at some stage in their life for a lifetime of boredom, misery, cheap tricks and cruelty. read full story / add a comment

The only thing preventing Israeli officials from jumping up and down with glee, according Aluf Benn of the daily Haaretz newspaper, was the fear that "demonstrated Israeli enthusiasm for the draft could influence support among Security Council members, who could demand a change in wording that may adversely affect Israel." So no celebration parties till the resolution is passed.
