This month, a Canadian court refused to hear a habeas corpus writ to challenge the continuing detention of Basque refugee Iban Apalaoza Sancho and the state's plans to deport him to Spanish jurisdiction. The court ruled that the country's Charter of Rights and Freedoms does not apply to residents in Canada who are not citizens. Iban is now on hunger strike in protest and the 17th has been set by the Canadian authorities for his deportation. The Dublin branch of the Irish Basque Committees called for support for protests it plans for the same day. read full story / add a comment

"Alarming concern has been expressed for the continuing medical condition of republican prisoner Aidan Hulme in Portlaoise Prison. Following a visit from a doctor it was observed that Aidan's toes on his injured leg had turned black giving rise to fears of possible gangrene. The doctor relayed to the Prison Governor that Aidan should be seen by a consultant in this field as a medical imperative. The Governor has stated that Aidan's case would be prioritized but as of yet no decisive action has been taken. read full story / add a comment

It is wrong and in-human to impose the Jews on the Arabs" (Mahatma Gandhi) "I believe that Gandhi's views were the most enlightened of all the political men of our time. We're looking for strong hi-res images from the Mayo struggle, to add to our 'Shell's Wild Lie' exhibition (http://www.artnotoil.org.uk/gallery/v/Shell/). Faces of those involved are good, but so are land/seascapes from the struggle etc. Please write to info@artnotoil.org.uk if you might be able to help. Thanks, Mark PS. We'd love any other images to consider, Shell-related or beyond, for the main Art Not Oil gallery, and here's some info we've sent to artists asking them to respond to the production of the Shell-sponsored 'Oedipus' in London: read full story / add a comment

The lawyer of Rozbrat squat has obtained information that the bailiff/debt collector has sent the records and complete documentation to the court in order to set the date of the auction. This date may appear soon. The ground where Rozbrat is situated may be sold. The campaign "Rozbrat stays!" was not very loud in the last months but it does not mean that the situation of Rozbrat has stabilized. We ask you to keep your eyes open and support us when necessary. Our stand is unchanged: we won't give up without fight! read full story / add a comment

Just in case you thought all the talk about the Great Gas Rip Off ® was lefty treehugger claptrap ®, it was confirmed today by no less a personage than the government's own energy watchdog, who turns out to be highly-paid civil servant called Dermot Nolan. He works for a shower called the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) , and he told the Oireachtas Energy Committee today that as far as the Irish consumer is concerned, the gas from the Corrib field may as well be coming from Outer Mongolia (he didn't use those exact words). read full story / add a comment

The list is as follows: Allied Irish Bank, Anglo Irish Bank, Bank of Ireland, Irish Life & Permanent, Irish Nationwide Building Society and the EBS. A number of groups from Erris and Co. Mayo went to meet with two government ministers, Éamon Ryan (Natural Resources) and Éamon Ó Cuív (Gaeltacht & Community Affairs) in Ballina today. These groups included Shell to Sea, Pobal Chill Chomáin, and Pobal le Chéile; a number of Erris fishermen accompanied by the parish priest of Kilcommon also met the ministers despite not having been invited. The ministers also met with the Pro- Gas Mayo Group and the Council for the West, organisations that could be candidly described as ‘astroturf’ (i.e. fake grassroots) and stalking horses for Shell. Following these encounters, the ministers met with the TDs for Mayo and county councillors from Erris, to round off what was a cynical PR exercise by an alarmed clueless government. read full story / add a comment |
