The recent controversy over some caricatures of Mohammed gave the Islamists an opportunity to wage a hysterical protest internationally. In many cases, this took a violent form and was clearly aimed at silencing those who dared to even portray Mohammed. In these demonstrations - across the world and in London, the very heart of Europe - many of the banners on show were emblazoned with shameful slogans. These included - “Those who insult Islam must be beheaded” and “Freedom go to hell” plus various other fatwa’s and threats against cartoonists and others who have the temerity to “insult” Islam. This is not the first time these forces have attacked people’s rights in the Middle East and Europe. Many writers, singers, even barbers and doctors have been targeted in the last 30 years let alone the enslavement of women in the Middle East under the pretext of the defence of the ‘honour’ of Islam. The furore over these caricatures is simply an excuse to stage another worldwide campaign to attack the right of freedom of expression. They want to turn Europe into yet another battlefield for their foul ideas. read full story / add a comment

failure of the European Union to engage with the relatively moderate recent statement from Hamas, which suggested a role for the international community in the initiation of talks, which, taking as their starting point, the international legal position of the 1967 borders, and which could lead to recognition of the state of Israel by Hamas, is deeply disappointing - says Michael D.Higgins read full story / add a comment

The attack on the prophet of Islam is condemned in its totality and the violence that ensued is also condemned. The mockery of the holocaust is equally condemned. We call on Muslims to end the violence immediately. We are hurt but we are not angry because the Prophet (pbuh) instructed us to control our anger. The strongest person is the one who can control his anger the Prophet is reported to have said. read full story / add a comment

The angry worldwide Muslim protests against the publication of cartoons depicting Muhammad in various European newspapers have shown again the enormous anger provoked amongst Muslims by Bush’s “war on terror” and the invasion of Iraq. However the issue that has sparked off these protests and their character has renewed discussion about a war of civilisations or of cultures. These developments are a sharp warning of the divisive tensions can develop in the absence of a strong socialist workers’ movement offering a class alternative read full story / add a comment

IT IS HAVING AN IMPACT! Organise! have called for another picket outside the dunnes stores branch in the Park Centre(off the Donegal Rd) in Belfast for 1 0'Clock this Friday in support of Joanne Delaney, a shop steward sacked for wearing her union badge. We are calling on all activists and groups to join this picket and picket other local dunnes stores branches! We hope to see you there as so we can continue this momentum and to keep the pressure up. If people cannot make it to above it would be excellent if you could hold a picket at your local Dunnes store. It only takes a handful of people to picket a shop. E-mail us and let us know if you can hold a local one. Whatever the case, those going to the Park centre, we will see you there. read full story / add a comment
