Current Biology reports on a population of monkeys which have been observed to use spears in their hunting of bush babies. It seems the tool use is primarily by female chimpanzees. AP have a report that captures most of the info at the link at the bottom of the page. There's also a National Geographic summary and linked video available here: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/02/070222-chimps-spears.html read full story / add a comment

Microsoft is often described as "evil" and accused of dirty tactics. Many people assume that these descriptions are inaccurate and that it's "just business" and competition. Perhaps it is, but when you actually read the internal documents that occasionally come to light you realise that they're hell bent on doing whatever they can to squash rivals. One such collection of material came out of the Comes vs. Microsoft case recently. Now, however, that material is disappearing and public internet archives e.g. WaybackMachine/Archive.org have also "cleansed" their records. The moral? If there's something really important then don't rely on private businesses to keep it around for you. Make your own copies, or work with others do do so. read full story / add a comment

Gillian McKeith is a popular TV quack whose books on health and nutrition are avidly consumed by a gullible public in the UK. Due to a grassroots efforts by bloggers the author of the book most borrowed from UK libraries in 2005/6 "Dr. Gillian McKeith's You Are What You Eat Cookbook", has been forced to stop misleadingly calling herself a doctor. read full story / add a comment

The independent documentary Loose Change [1] is doing the rounds in screenings and downloads (over 4 million apparently for just this version on Google Videos) [2]. Despite overwhelming testimony from independent scientific experts as publicised by Counterpunch [3], Popular Mechanics [4] and South Park [5] the documentary is spreading a pall of confusion and misinformation about 9/11. George Monbiot takes it on in his latest column: read full story / add a comment

Over 17 metric tons of highly enriched uranium (HEU) are slated for transfer into the hands of private contractors, whom under the auspices of the U.S. Dept. of Energy program will "down-blend" the weapons-grade material into nuclear reactor-friendly low-enriched uranium (LEU) -- which would then be shipped to foreign nations. read full story / add a comment

Scientists who study human evolution have discovered the evolutionary origins of morality. The concept of morality exists in every culture on Earth, but the morals themselves are different, which causes a lot of conflict in the world. Now that the Democrats own the U.S. Congress, I’m sure that conflict is about to get very interesting… read full story / add a comment

On this day 50 years ago IBM unveiled its RAMAC (Random Access Memory Accounting Machine). A computer machine which weighed several tonnes & occupied the same space as a bunch of fridge freezers. It was the first hard drive which could be searched & accessed without starting from the "beginning" of the data flow & running to the end, such as one must do with a magnetic tape. Between 13/9/56 and its withdrawl from the market in the mid 1960's IBM sold over 6,000 of the units each of which could store 5 megabytes of information. read full story / add a comment

Vincent Paquette & Mario Beauregard are tippy toppy scientists based in Canada who have built their reputation scanning happy brains. Meaning, they have paid their mortage, put their kids through school, gone on holidays & generally got on with it all thanks to ample government & some small corporate funding. During which they've selected small groups of "happy individuals" & put them through brain scans to discover what really kicks that happiness switch". Having had wonderful results on their neural scans of men at orgasm they have now recruited no less than 15 Carmelite nuns (who belong to the order founded by the very happy Teresa in today's illustration) to go through functional magnetic resonance whislt they remember the most intense..... read full story / add a comment

European German speakers appear to be leading the way in combatting internet addiction. The Swiss canton of Zurich has just joined with some of the German states and one Austrian province to draw up plans to combat "cyber addiction". The Swiss estimate at least 3% of surfers in their country suffer from "excessive" internet use. Suffering surfers are most likely male, aged between 20 and 30 and have grown up with computer games and other entertainment systems such as "playstation" and "gameboy". read full story / add a comment

For those who have not been to a computer fair before, a computer fair is no different from any other market in that it is composed of stalls run by various vendors. Each vendor pays a small fee for the space they occupy and uses it to display and sell their goods. The sale that takes place is a transaction between the vendor and the customer and has nothing to do with the organizer of the fair. read full story / add a comment |
