news report
Monday April 20, 2015 22:41 by 1 of Indymedia - Indymedia Ireland
The Indymedia mailing lists run by the global Indymedia server, used for the running of the Indymedia Ireland site for the contact form, reported posts, newswire editorial actions and various other tasks have shutdown and are no longer available. This has necessitated the setting up of a new set of working lists on this server but it means people will have to resubscribe if they so wish. Since the birth of Indymedia in 1999, the global indymedia collective quickly setup a technical infrastructure to support all the then new Indymedia websites popping up all over the place. This technical infrastructure included a server to run all the email ../lists of different indymedia websites including the ones for Indymedia Ireland. These included our general, editorial and newswire mailing list including several others that fell into disuse over the years. However over the past 10 years, Indymedia has been declining and most of the Indymedia websites and centers have closed down. This has affected the global Indymedia too and the pool of technical resources has greatly shrunk to the point that there are now not enough people to run the original server that was hosting all the various Indymedia mailing ../lists. On top of this, the server called sarai was very old and was reporting failures. Unfortunately it has now come to pass that the server has been shutdown since the end of March (2015) and all these mailing ../lists are no longer operating. Their archives are also unavailable and at this point it is unclear whether Indymedia Ireland will be able to gain access to it's own email archives. In the past few weeks, work has been ongoing to setup on the Indymedia Ireland server, a new set of mailing ../lists and these are now ready. What this means for anyone who was previously subscribed to the old mailing ../lists is that they need to re-subscribe to the new ../lists. Any archives will only be from the start of the new mailing ../lists. While this work was being carried out the opportunity was taken to setup a new mailing list called Indymedia-events-list for posting events listed on Indymedia. The way this new email list works is that if you want to be notified of events 2 days prior to the event, you simply join this email list and you will receive the notifications. The old and new addresses are listed here
Follow each of the above links for details on how to subscribe to each one. The ../lists page has been updated with this information. |
