Young Fine Gael Join Student Protests Over On-line Teacher Training Course

category dublin | miscellaneous | press release author Wednesday November 05, 2003 14:02author by Campaigns Director - YFG Report this post to the editors

Young Fine Gael are today joining in protests by trainee-teachers over the controversial state approval for the new Hibernia College on-line teaching course.

Speaking at the protest march at St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra, Young Fine Gael spokesperson William Lavelle stated: "Young Fine Gael supports today's protests because we are not satisfied that an 18 month part-time on-line course will meet current and future training requirements, and produce the best possible teachers.

"On-line education is a great step forward so we sincerely hope that the government's sloppy involvement in the controversy regarding Hibernia College will not cast a shadow over the future development of on-line education in Ireland

" Young Fine Gael is therefore calling on the Minister for Education to ensure that the Hibernia Scheme and any other future on-line educational courses are to the same standard as similar courses offered in traditional colleges.

"In the mean-time we believe that the Minister must invest in more providing more places in the traditional training colleges such as St. Pats and Froebel.

I like the way YFG announce opposition to an online teaching degree here but yet let their Students Against Neutrality iniative quietly sneak out with no similar publicity? So As a favour to YFG I will announce it for you all. YFG want Ireland to give up our position of neutrality and jump on the murdering bandwagon.

Why is it necessarily "jumping on the murdering bandwagon"?

Our neutrality is little more than a conceit in effect, and don't forget that scrapping neutrality would theoretically allow us to take a stand against the "murdering bandwagon".

Of course, the chances of that actually happening are slim but it would afford the State the freedom to make that choice.

Is it not a tad strange that Olwyn Enright, the FG Spokesperson for Education, came out yesterday in support of the online teacher training course and yet the youth branch of the same party are campaigning against it?

Olwyn called for the standards in Hibernia to be the same at the standard in traditional teaching colleges, (see: www.finegael.ie)
which is very much tehe same as what YFG are saying, is'nt it???

YFG are jumping on the bandwagon with this protest. I'm a student teacher and having to deal with this blue shirt shites is painful! They fought hard to avoid being seen to be opposed to a 'private' commercial college- preferring to talk about professionalism in teaching. How could a "respectable" right wing crowd like them be seen opposed to as one YFG student described as "an entrpreneur trying to provide a SERVICE". Stop me laughing please. Public service or private profit- which do they see as important? How do they answer that???? Piss off you blue shirt band wagon jumpers! Especially funny when Nora Owen (FG)'s been taking back handers from developers and Frank Dunlop!
NO TO PRIVATSIATION OF PUBLIC EDUCATION!

Regarding Young Fianna Gaels comments on Hibernia college's credability as a primary school teaching programme I, like so many others(including friends of mine in St Patricks) would just like to say how disapointed and offended I am by them. I am a graduate from NUIG and am currently quarter way through the Hibernia course. I am doing subbing work in Galway and also in my home town of Longford on occassions. I have a great love for teaching and for working with children. These comments do absolutely nothing in improving the standard of teachers today in Ireland. They are the type of comments you might hear from an old school master from the 1920's.They are old fasioned(despite coming from 'young fianna gael) backward and small minded.Mabey its just a case that the likes of St Patricks etc are jealous and getting nervous about Hibernias success, which is so obvious. Despite what people think, Irish plays a crucial role at Hibernia, just like at other teacher coleges and I am looking foward to the 3 week Gaeltacht course in Galway this coming summer. The people at Hibernia are all extremely helpfull and furthermore, any Principal that I have been in contact with have nothing but good words to say about the course. I think its about time people(Especially those who have no connection with National schools) just grow up and open their minds to the start of something new and fresh.Mabey if Fianna Gael had a more modern view then they would not be where they are today(I have no political prferences)
Slan,
Ruairi.
