Repression conference in Jury's Hotel This October the Jane's “Less Lethal Weapons Conference” is taking place in The Berkeley Court Hotel, Ballsbridge on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th of October. Less lethal weapons can be defined as any weapon which is less likely to kill than normal military hardware, therefore normal guns and bombs are out while plastic bullets electric shock batons and tear gas are in. Previously marketed as ‘non-lethal’ weapons they had to be rebranded once people started noticing the fatality rate. |

I belive they have already been in contact along with other relevant groups in the north and will be coming down for the protests.

excellent title :)
Anti-war, human rights and political groups say the use of plastic bullet, beanbag and Taser guns erode the right to peaceful protest and intimidate ordinary people.
I have an idea, lets not have any police force ever. Sure isnt Ireland the land of fairies and pixie dust? We have no crime so all the Gardai do is wander around aimlessly looking for a protest so they can beat the crap out of people. Im sorry but whatver intimidation will be on criminals not the ordinary person. You wont be intimidated by a tazer or extendable baton or a stab-vest anymore than by the current baton and draconian uniform.
Aisling Reidy of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties said the Garda recommendations on the use of such weapons here in Ireland should be subject to public scrutiny.
Obviously it will but not for intimidating people but to look at the benefits compared to the drawbacks.
hmm. a quick look at the sort of situations where plastic bullets, bean bag rounds and tear gas are used will bring to light the amazing fact that these devices are not used to deal with everyday crime, they are used almost exclusively at protests. No one is suggesting we turn the country over to the wee folk, though admittadely their brown envelopes would be smaller and they could be bribed with childrens teeth, maybe you are on to something there.
