Is the 'Muslim vote' set to abandon Labour? With three quarters of British Muslims refusing to believe Hamas committed atrocities on October 7th, it's hard to see how Labour can retain them, says Frank Haviland.

With swivel-eyed zeal, Ed Miliband has been telling broadcasters he has a "mandate" to deliver his unworkable and unaffordable Net Zero agenda. Not when just 20% of the public voted for you, says Ben Pile.

Iraq referendum

category national | politics / elections | opinion/analysis author Saturday October 08, 2005 21:55author by Jim Holohan Report this post to the editors

All "Yes"
All "Yes"

The Iraqi Referendum

The result is already known.

The ballot boxes have already been stuffed.

If that was not enough they have put no “No” on the referendum card.

Blair approved the wording of the referendum question when Fatso Talabani was at no. 10.

Bush was also delighted with it.

He rigged his first and second elections but he thought the Iraqis did not know this much about democracy.

All’s well that ends well except for the major civil war that is about to break out when the Sunnis find they have been duped again.

I'm as anti-imperialist as they come but i'm getting more and more annoyed at the blinkered analysis of some anti-war people,

First of all, if the US pulled out tomorrow, and a perfect democratic election was held the next day, the Shia parties who are in the government now would still be elected to power,
(BTW I know all about the “elections“ the US organised in Guatemala and El Salvador during th 1980s and how they murdered anyone slightly opposed to the right wing regimes) but the election in january was not the same-the US didn't even want it in the first place, it was only held because Ayatollah Al Sistani told them there would be trouble if they didn't -the US backed down cause they knew a Shia uprising would kick them out of the country in about a week

How can the armed resistance be called “national” when only 20% of the people (the Sunnis)are supporting it, (Moqtada al Sadr had an uprising but didn't get the support of the shia people to sustain it )

If there is a civil war it will be the fault of the Sunni chauvanists, they'd been in power for 80 years and they're pissed off that the Shias' and Kurds' day has come,
Before the invasion an anti-war proposal was to support the Iraqi resistance to Saddam and to help them start a revolution, does anyone actually think that Saddam would have handed over power to the Shia willingly, there would have been a civil war anyway!!!

What exact right do the Sunnis have to say to the Kurds they can't have autonomy, let alone independence, why doesn't the anti-war movement talk about self-determination for the Kurds? because it would give ammo to the pro-war propagandists??? Thats not a reason to be silent on the issue

If the Shia parties impose Sharia law and curtail the rights of women it's because the majority of people voted for them-blaming the US for this is ridiculous, (it's like blaming the British because we elected right-wing religous gobshites to rule the country after we forced them to leave the 26 counties)
this “blame Bush for everything“ attitude only gives the pro-war side the opportunity to cloud the debate
Blame the US for the things they have actually done wrong-killing thousands of civilians, torturing prisoners, training the new army and police in the usual latin america style mode, trying to privitise the ecomony etc
