Cowley highlights Corrib safety review problems

category mayo | miscellaneous | press release author Tuesday November 29, 2005 17:48author by S2S Report this post to the editors

Dr. Jerry Cowley, Independent TD for Mayo, has been informed in the Dail that the findings of the report on the Corrib Gas project by the Centre for Public Inquiry will be commented upon by Avantica, the company
commissioned by Minister Dempsey to carry out his own safety review on the controversial project, at a presentation to be held at the beginning of December.

Dr. Cowley was further informed that the mediator appointed by Marine Minister Noel Dempsey, TD., Mr. Peter Cassells, will chair this presentation, and the consultants from Advantica will also be present.

The Centre for Public Inquiry commissioned a detailed independent analysis of the health and safety implications of the Corrib Gas project from Richard Kuprewicz, president of US based consultants, Accufacts Inc., which was published a few days ago.

The Kuprewicz report concludes that the current proposed pipeline route is unacceptable because of it's close proximity to people and dwellings. In the light of these findings Dr. Cowley had asked Marine Minister Noel Dempsey, TD., whether he would call a halt to the project as planned until a safe means of bringing the gas ashore can be agreed.

Minister of State, Mr. Noel Treacy TD replied in the Adjournment Debate
yesterday evening on behalf of Minister Dempsey.

Shell has already responded, through Andy Pyle, and states that the research made on behalf of the Centre of Public Enquiry was limited and that they didn't have sufficient information, in Shells view.

That has been part of the problem for Mayo people all along - no information available from Shell. Plenty of spin but no information. If Andy Pyle thinks the report is lacking because of missing or incomplete informatin, he has only himself to blame. Give us the information Andy!!!

We have been looking for the truth for some time now and this report has certainly given us new hope that this will be done properly - Shell to Sea!!
