An attack carried out on Friday night at the main Sarposa prison in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar has freed bout 400 political prisoners and 750 others. A water truck full of explosives was driven up to the main gate killing 15 guards and breached the walls. The 400 political prisoners were being illegally detained after being swept up in NATO military operations. 300 women came to protest outside the prison in May and said their relatives inside had been picked up by NATO/American military and were innocent.

400 political prisoners took part in a hunger strike in May to protest their illegal detention without trial and more than 40 stitched their lips together with thread.
