The Government has declared violence against women to be a national emergency. Yet it's about to dump 600 young men, many from misogynistic societies, into Crowborough. This is 100% incompatible, says Madeleine Gillies.

Limerick remembers those murdered in Gaza

category limerick | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Monday December 28, 2009 14:35author by Sean Clinton - Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign Report this post to the editors

On Sunday 27th December the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign erected a memorial tree in Limerick city centre to mark the first anniversary of Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza last winter, The names of the 1415 people who were killed during the 22 day assault were printed on colour-coded cards for the public to attach to the tree - blue for men, pink for women and white cards for the over 300 children killed. A detailed list of the names, addresses, gender, ages, and occupation of those murdered was displayed on large laminated sheets for the public to study and see for themselves the fact that the overwhelming majority of the victims were innocent civilians.

The resulting displays made for a very poignant attraction for shoppers and motorists in the city centre. Many expressed their shock and sadness at the sight as the cards shimmered in the frozen air illuminated by bright winter sunshine. Hundreds of people signed a Book of Condolences, took information fliers about the genocide and on-going siege of Gaza and about the civil society campaign to boycott Israeli products in Ireland.

Well done , the tree looks brilliant and poignant, great to keep them all in our minds while everyone is obsessing about our economy and issues nearer home.
