The UNITE trade union has called on Labour to resist the lure of coalition with Fine Gael and opt instead to lead a ‘game changing’ opposition coalition of the left. “This election was about change,” said UNITE Regional Secretary Jimmy Kelly. “Part of the change was unequivocal; the removal of Fianna Fáil from power, but the rest is now in the hands of the Labour Party leadership.” “The people did not vote for a Fine Gael overall majority. SIPTU members at the Davenport Hotel in Dublin mounted pickets this morning after being taken off the roster for refusing to sign new contracts reducing their national minimum wage rate by almost €1 an hour. When the legislation was being passed, the Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan, gave assurances that existing employees of companies on €8.65 an hour could not have it reduced without their consent. However, the workers concerned, all women from Eastern Europe, have been brought into three meetings over the past three weeks and repeatedly told they must sign the new contracts or face being taken off the roster. Given the events in Tunisia and Egypt the campaign in support of Iranian political prisoners has taken on a new urgency. So has the campaign for democracy in Iran. Iranians are just as entitled to freely choose their own leaders as Egyptians and Tunisians. Any change must come from within Iran and from below. The latest IMF report, published last Friday, two days after the gombeens in Leinster House voted to accept the deal, reveals plans to reintroduce third level fees, abolish the current grant scheme for low income students and replace it with a loan scheme to pay for fees and confirms that child benefit will be means tested. On the morning of 21 August 2010, my client, Julian Assange, read in the Swedish tabloid newspaper Expressen that there was a warrant out for his arrest relating to allegations of “rape” involving two Swedish women. However, even the substance of the allegations, as revealed to the press through unauthorized disclosures do not constitute what any advanced legal system considers to be rape; as various media outlets have reported “the basis for the rape charge” purely seems to constitute a post-facto dispute over consensual, but unprotected sex days after the event. Both women have declared that they had consensual sexual relations with our client and that they continued to instigate friendly contact well after the alleged incidents. The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) today welcomed the government’s refusal to grant Israel Military Industries the contract to supply 10 million bullets to the Irish Defence Forces. The contract for the 5.56 x 45mm rounds, to be bought over a five-year period, has instead gone to Belgian and Brazilian arms manufacturers. Over the past seven months the IPSC had been running a campaign (http://www.ipsc.ie/bullets) against the granting of the contract to any Israeli company, which saw the organisation and its supporters lobbied the government, undertook a letter writing campaign and protested outside the Defence Minister Tony Killeen’s constituency office in Co.
