On Thursday July 29th the HSE were presented with 5,000 signatures on petitions demanding the maintaining of A&E services in Ennis, Nenagh and St.John’s Hospitals. The Socialist Party, who collected the petitions, claim that this is only the beginning and that an active campaign must be built. Socialist Party spokesperson, Cian Prendiville said: “The HSE are unlikely to give up on their agenda of centralisation and cutbacks without a fight. Petitions can be a first step, but what is needed is for people to come along to the upcoming health forum on July 29th and use it as a launching pad for a local action group.” read full story / add a comment

Limerick City Council claim signs erected by the Lisbon Campaign for Middle East Justice and Peace (LCMEJP) were an "incitement" The Council removed at least 5 large "No to Lisbon" referendum signs from locations around the city between the 26th May and the 11th June without informing anyone. Gardai in Henry st., Roxboro and Mary St. stations have been investigating this matter for over four weeks. The story was covered in the Limerick Leader two weeks in a row and in the Limerick Independent and the Irish Times but Council officials never thought it appropriate to contact the Gardai, LCMEJP or the printers event though contact details were on the signs. read full story / add a comment

On 1 October 2007, the Weston Gardens Residents' Association, of which I am Cathaoirleach, sent a letter by registered post to Brendan Kenny (CEO Limerick Regeneration Agencies). When Mr. Kenny did not respond after 3 weeks, we decided to go public. On 24 October 2007, we bought a full page in the Limerick Leader and published a shortened version . The reaction of Mr. Kenny & co. was predictable; spin and deny. read full story / add a comment

Update to the open letter published on indymedia on the 20th of September 2007. Same sorry old story. No responsibility taken by the authorities who are preventing me from having my car in a public place, or driving any vehicle, due to their on-going vendetta. I am hopeful that the minister will take my complaint seriously and deal with it appropriately. Otherwise, its more hardship without any answers. read full story / add a comment

Open letter to Minister John Gormley TD. The letter outlines how Limerick County Council's motor tax office have forced me off the road and are now failing to take responsibility for my plight. It is a complaint to the Minister, in the hopes that he may help to resolve the situation. I have not had an acknowledgement from the Minister's department yet in relation to my email. I have circulated my letter to a number of newspapers and it remains to be seen if they publish its contents. read full story / add a comment

The Atlantic Homecare outlet on Childers Road, Limerick that earlier this year removed all Israeli produce from its shelves (in response to a protest by the IPSC) now appears to be redoubling its effort to sell as much Israeli made Keter produce as possible to unsuspecting customers. In what appears to be a clear attempt to at least distract, if not completely mislead customers, they have a large poster on a Keter shed with the slogan "Irish Owned - make it Irish make it Atlantic ..." read full story / add a comment

Members of the Limerick branch of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign mounted a picket outside the new Woodie's DIY outlet on the Ennis Road, Limerick on Sunday afternoon. A leaked report for the government and HSE contains plans to close down A&E services in St.John’s, Nenagh and Ennis hospitals. If introduced these cuts will put peoples lives at risk throughout the Mid-west region. These plans must be fought by patients, communities and the trade unions. The report by the firm ‘Teamwork’ will be published in the next few weeks and if it is implemented it will further clog up A&E at the Regional hospital and leave thousands of people in Clare and Tipperary hours away from emergency services. The only reason this is being done is to cut costs. read full story / add a comment

On Monday the 2nd of July, a group of around 20 Youth Defence distributed their anti-abortion material throughout the city of Limerick. One of the points upon which they decided to mobilise was the Limerick Family planning clinic (27 Mallow Street, Limerick. Tel: 061 312 02). It is in this building that men and woman go to get information on matters of contraception and abortion clinics . Pro-choice activists believe that women should have access to safe and legal abortion and, equally, that women should be protected from forced abortions.About 5 left wing activists staged a counter protest on the doors of the clinic for the majority of the time the extremists were present. read full story / add a comment
