Rejoice! For we are at the dawn of a "golden age of nuclear", according to the UK Government. There's just one wrinkle, says Ben Pile. It's reactors for shiny data centres, but unreliable renewables for the rest of us.

Independent Workers Union understands that the cuts we face are part of a global attack on public services. The response must also be international and hence we have invited Susan Rosenthal, Canadian Physician and author of ‘Class, Health and Healthcare’ here from the International Health Workers for People Over Profit and support her efforts to form a local branch of the organisation. Susan is inviting health workers and members of the public to discuss how we can organize a local and international fight to defend health services. She will be sharing a platform with veteran trade unionist, Joe Bowers, at 7pm sharp, Friday 19th June at the Belfast Unemployed Resource Centre, Donegal Street. read full story / add a comment

Working people continue to bear the brunt of the economic recession in terms on job cuts, poverty wages and house repossessions, while the rich and powerful in our society are bailed out again. This is state capitalism and comes under various forms from thatcherism to neo-liberalism.

The speaker will present a brief overview of neo-liberalism and how it affects working people and the environment. Is neo-liberalism just naked capitalism under a different name? Does increased state involvement in the economy signal the end of neo-liberalism, or is it just a temporary measure?

When the Warzone Centre/Giros closed in 2003 a lot of people in Belfast didn’t realise what they’d had until it was gone. Since then different individuals and groups have talked about maybe getting something going again. The will was certainly there but some sort of catalyst was needed and then towards the end of 2007 a few of us discussed resurrecting the Warzone label to bring some of the old bands into the digital age; to document those times but also, more poignantly, we hoped that it would maybe inspire people to get motivated. read full story / add a comment

The Visteon occupations show that we are far from apathetic when it comes to defending our jobs, wages and standard of living. Workers began occupying the Finaghy plant on March 31st, after administrators announced the loss of around 600 jobs at Visteon/Ford plants at Belfast, Basildon and Enfield in England. Davy McMurray, from the Unite trade union, said the way the job cuts were announced was "brutal." Workers were given six minutes notice of their sackings, being treated like mere commodities to be bought and sold, then discarded by our bosses when necessary. read full story / add a comment

Mayday is a time of reflecting and renewing the proud tradition of working-class resistance and commitment to social revolution. The spirit of class struggle continues to burn in our class from the Visteon workplace occupations to the school occupations in Glasgow and beyond. As we continue to bear the brunt of job cuts, house evictions and police brutality, the powerful message of direct action and solidarity against the bosses and the state is as relevant and necessary as ever before. read full story / add a comment
