Community Groups around Ireland will protest in towns, cities and villages across Ireland about the water charges on Saturday 31 January. Seek them out and join them!
The Dublin local groups are planning to all meet up in the City Centre,
Please join the protests and keep the pressure up. The temporary lower charges introduced by the government will be withdrawn after the next election and all waivers and allowances will be abolished if they privatise Irish Water which IS their plan. They later plan to charge for waste water! This is on the cards. We must stop abolish these charges and stop this disgraceful act. read full story / add a comment

Brid Smith, a People Before Profit councillor, has condemned the role that RPS has been granted in the formulation of the Eastern–Midlands Draft Regional Waste Management Plan 2015-2021. ‘A draft waste plan was presented to Dublin City Councillors this morning which allows for greater centralisation in the management of waste. ‘The plan was based on research drawn up by the company RPS. This company has already had an undue influence in Irish policy making. Two of the directors of Irish Water have already come from this company. read full story / add a comment ![]()

On Thursday night RTE Primetime presented what many have described as a 'regime broadcast', an utterly transparent hatchet job of the anti-Water Charges campaign. This featured, supposedly, an anonymous water meter installer describing being accosted by knife, hatchet, baseball bat, and golf club wielding maniacal protesters – the sinister fringe. The core message transmitted in the program was 'you can protest, but don't protest effectively'. If you watched it (link below), what did you think? read full story / add a comment ![]()

Ireland is waking up...
Despite what RTE and others may say, anyone who was there knows that there were over 100,000 people present. Half of Dublin was brought to a standstill as a result of the rally as ordinary citizens spent the day on the streets, along with the hundreds of homeless people in evidence. read full story / add a comment ![]()

This article was written by the WSM and appears on their website and is the text for a 4 page PDF leaflet which you are encouraged to print and distribute. In the face of massive opposition to the water charges, the government have made several clumsy attempts to placate us, while their partners in the media seek to frighten us off the streets. The latest attempt, delivered by Alan Kelly, Minister for the Environment, Community & Local Government in the Dáil on the 19th of November, is the plan to charge us €160 per year for our water and to give ‘eligible households’ a water conservation grant of €100. read full story / add a comment

Tens and tens of thousands of Irish workers and youth have taken to the streets and confronted the government and the state. What is the nature of this movement and what is its potential? Should it just be seen as a movement to bring down this government and replace it with another government. Or should it be seen as having the potential to bring down the system and replace it with another system. read full story / add a comment ![]()

This is a repost of an important article on the Irish Left Review website and goes into detail on the connection between the Water Charges and the upcoming Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) which is currently being concluded in secret by the EU and US. *** The water charges can and must be defeated by resistance and non-payment but water, as a human right, must also be secured as a publicly owned and controlled resource universally available. Remember, we had to fight water charges in the 1980’s and again in the 1990’s so let’s make this win a permanent one. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Workers move en masse against the water charges. Their leaders can no longer hold them back. The left no longer have an excuse not to themselves be able to build a mass force. The left sectarianism, ultra leftism and opportunism of these groups has to be confronted. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Over 100 separate local demonstrations took place today (Sat Nov 1st) against the Water Charges and for the Right 2 Water. Organisers estimate conservatively that over 150,000 were out on the streets today to send a message to this government that they won't accept paying for water twice and having it privatised later. People realize that all the false promises and allowances will eventually be dropped and the long term result will be that a privatised water company will prey on the people with massive hikes in charges and big fat bonuses for themselves. There were protests from Cork & Kerry to Wexford to Dublin to Limerick to Galway to Sligo to Donegal to Cavan to Dundalk and all over the Midlands. There has never been anything like it perhaps since the foundation of the state. The people are truly fed up and are determined and will not be abused by the political technocrats of big Capital that is robbing every social gain our forebears fought hard to get over the past century. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The anti-water charges campaign is a populist campaign driven by the opportunist politics of the Socialist Party, the Socialist Workers Party and other organisations including the UNITE trade union. The Socialist Party and the Socialist Workers Party merely view the campaign as a means to enhance their popularity within the working class while opportunistically impeding the development of communist consciousness among the working class. read full story / add a comment |
