The site of the former Hotel Gerhus in the village of Fassberg in the German state of Lower Saxony is now squatted by a neoNazi group loyal to the far-right German NPD deputy leader Jürgen Rieger. Although the building is in receivership, and despite the little village never reportedly having had the pleasure of a squat or social centre before, the 8000 metre squared piece of real estate is now breaking news in the German language. A mostly ignored press statement issued by Rieger last Friday announced his activists would occupy the premises after a leasing deal went sour (for the nazi's) & they felt they were being ripped off by someone in the estate agents' sector for offering them the space. Accordingly in the last 24 hours German NeoNazi's have indeed occupied the site - with the intention of turning the 70+ plus bedroomed building into a "training, educational & political revival" centre. read full story / add a comment

national / eu / press release Wednesday July 08, 2009 17:21 by Patricia McKenna
the Government is engaged in a cynical exercise of political manipulation. Speaking on behalf of the People’s Movement, which successfully campaigned against ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in last year’s referendum, McKenna said “these so-called ‘Legal Guarantees’ on the Lisbon Treaty are nothing more than an exercise in creative manipulation designed to mislead the public. This fact was even recognised by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin who after EU foreign ministers met in Luxembourg recently, said, “The impetus from other member states is to be helpful, creative and try to resolve these issues … We are quietly confident and hopeful,”

“What the Minister really means is that Legal guarantees on the Lisbon Treaty are just a creative way of giving people a feeling of legal certainty which does not and cannot exist.” Said McKenna read full story / add a comment

A politics.ie poster has retrieved the text of a House of Lords debate from Hansard in which Kinnock says the guarantees are not legally binding. The whole yes camp are caught with trousers down by their ankles! Here's what she said: "Those guarantees do not change the Lisbon treaty; the European Council conclusions are very clear on them. The Lisbon treaty, as debated and decided by our Parliament, will not be changed and, on the basis of these guarantees, Ireland will proceed to have a second referendum in October." She added: "Nothing in the treaty will change and nothing in the guarantees will change the treaty as your Lordships agreed it."

Just as the German Constitutional Court requires the German Parliament to do; Ireland should not be content with a lesser standard of parliamentary control of Government Ministers than Germany if the Lisbon Treaty should be ratified. read full story / add a comment

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung says the Constitutional Court ruling is demanding a law to guarantee the rights of the German Parliament in the EU decision-making process.

If that is so, should not Oireachtas Eireann have a law requiring this too - and Westminster and Paris and Prague and Bucharest, and 22 others?

Should not all EU National Parliaments also have “participation in European lawmaking procedures”? read full story / add a comment

Not one single word of the Lisbon Treaty will be altered by these guarantees, which is why they do not need to be ratified by the National Parliaments of the 27 Member States. The so called ‘legal guarantees’ are nothing more than an interpretation by EU Heads of State as to what they think the Lisbon Treaty means. However, if the Lisbon Treaty comes into force, it will be the EU Court of Justice in Luxembourg which will interpret Lisbon. The EU Court is the only body authorised under the European Treaties to interpret the Treaties themselves and decide how they should be applied. The political decision and agreement of a particular group of EU Prime Ministers and Presidents, which is what we are being presented with, cannot and will not decide what Lisbon means. read full story / add a comment

Mr B has flown off to meet Obama, the first time they share space since the queen of Engurland ticked Berlusconi off at the G20 gig in April. Their one hour meeting will be had through interpreters since neither speaks the same language or lingo. But before he boarded the plane quipping &/or gaffing yesterday that he was going to Washington "handsome and tanned", he did open a new can of worms so interesting that it merited pick-up in today's Irish Independent and prompted a thoughtful analysis from the Italian "Repubblica" journalist Ezio Mauro, a complete of translation of which to English is reproduced below. It seems despite winning the EU election Mr B really is realising he's on the way out. & now rather than it all being a "leftwing" plot, a "rightwing" name has entered the picture. read full story / add a comment
