The Dutch papers are full of it. The crisis loans imposed on Greece, Portugal and Ireland are generating huge profit. Holland is lending 390 billion at historically low rates and they are lending monies to Ireland at historically high rates. read full story / add a comment

Printing money, currency devaluation, changing interest rates, debt accumulation and public works involve tinkering with circulation.Manipulating the circulation of capital constitutes a superficial remedy that,in the long run, solve nothing while making things worse. The People’s Movement welcomes today’s wake up call in this morning’s Irish Times by twenty six Oireachtas members and one MEP warning about the implications of an commitment by the Government to a very significant diminution of the sovereignty of the State, hoping that it can sleep walk the country into it. Twenty-six members of the Oireachtas and one MEP, have joined in an initiative with the People’s Movement (which campaigned against the Lisbon Treaty in the two referenda) to demand that the Irish electorate have the determining say by way of referendum on the proposals to establish a permanent eurozone fund by Treaty amendments that will be binding on Ireland. read full story / add a comment

It is seen by the Fine Gael-Labour Government, as well as by its Fianna Fail predecessor, as a way round the restrictions on ratifying new EU Treaties without constitutional referendums here which were laid down by the Supreme Court in its 1987 Crotty judgement. There is still a little time left for Ireland to foil this power grab by the Eurozone elite if our political leaders can summon the courage to serve the Irish people rather than themselves. read full story / add a comment

Besides this pot of gold the farmers may receive other moneys from European revenue. Many of the farmers officially retire and receive a pension for this while their sons continue to farm. But many of these older farmers only officially retire. Many of them unofficially continue to work while picking up their regular pension. And as far as I know their pensions were not cut as were those of the public service. read full story / add a comment

“The member states whose currency is the euro may establish a stability mechanism to be activated if indispensable to safeguard the stability of the euro area as a whole. The granting of any required financial assistance under the mechanism will be made subject to strict conditionality.” - Amendment to Article 136 of the EU Treaties (TFEU) which was decided on by the 27 EU Member States at the March European Council summit and which licensed the 17 Eurozone States to sign the European Stability Mechanism Treaty on yesterday week, 11 July. This ESM Treaty would establish a permanent EU bailout fund from 2013. The ESM Treaty and the Art.136 EU Treaty amendment which authorises it now go around for ratification by the Member States. The Government has decided not to put it to referendum here even though it means more power to the EU. The ESM Treaty can be downloaded from the internet. read full story / add a comment

Whether we like it or not Ireland is now a colony of the EU and the IMF, who dictate every aspect of public policy. Instead of our taxes being spent on our local services, whose wages would be by and large spent locally and bolster our econonomy, we are forced to pay off foreign corporations who are free to invest this wealth wherever they see fit. Its time for the Irish people to decide. This is our country and these issues are too importent to be left up to those who have proven cannot be trusted on these issues. It is after all, our future and our lives and those of our children and grandchildren are at stake. read full story / add a comment

Ireland’s Euro-fanatics and ultra-Europhiles are getting panicky. As the European Central Bank turns us all into indentured debt peons for a generation and France and Germany plan assaults on our 12.5% company tax rate, they fear that Ireland’s long love-affair with the EU may be coming to an end. Hence the ceremony of rededication planned for the Dáil this Monday, “Europe Day”, 9 May. Following his recent election to the Irish Parliament Joe Higgins the Socialist Party / CWI MEP for Dublin was obliged to announce his replacement as MEP from the election substitute list. Today the Socialist Party announced that Paul Murphy will be the new Socialist Party / CWI MEP to take over from Joe Higgins. Paul Murphy has been a Parliamentary Assistant to Joe Higgins since the 2009 Euro elections. read full story / add a comment

A very timely and useful analysis of how Sinn Fein policy has moved significantly to the right in relation to the EU has appeared in the current edition of the Socialist Voice. It looks at how the party is now heading towards the right on the EU and that drift to the right is not an accident and will not end there. This has implications for republicans and socialists in this country and for all Irish people especially with the projected increases in SF support in the national elections next week. read full story / add a comment
