Focus Ireland has launched a new hard-hitting campaign to highlight the trauma that the deepening homelessness crisis is causing to nearly 4,000 children in Ireland. The emotive campaign projects images of children who are homeless on to a number of landmark buildings in Dublin* to highlight homelessness and Focus Ireland’s 4 point plan to end the crisis. The charity is running an innovative outdoor projection campaign to shine the spotlight on the growing crisis as the number of children homeless has shot up by a shocking 356% in five years (From 828 children homeless in Sept 2014 to 3778 in July 2019* ) read full story / add a comment

With the release of first round CAO offers this week and the new academic year quickly approaching, tens of thousands of students across the country are beginning the search for a place to live. Against the backdrop of the housing crisis, this search has become a punishing and demoralising experience for many students – campus beds are limited in number, private rents are extortionately high and conditions are often cramped or otherwise inadequate. The lack of quality affordable student accommodation has been a serious problem for a number of years now but each year the scale of crisis grows. In 2015, a Higher Education Authority (HEA) report revealed a shortage of 25,000 student beds nationally whilst also predicting an additional 25-30,000 full time students by 2024. read full story / add a comment

Irish Parliament (Dáil) votes 36-60 to reject a Sinn Féin bill which aimed to insert a constitutional right to housing.
This time last year we learnt that one in every five TDs (public representatives in the Irish Dáil [parliament]) – are actually landlords (“30 of Ireland’s 158 TDs are landlords. The Fine Gael Minister responsible for housing, Eoghan Murphy, is playing with figures again. He wants to protect his PR image rather than get on with the job of building houses. He pretends that the numbers who are homeless is ‘just under’ 10,000. But this does not include those registered as rough sleepers or women who are in refuges because of domestic abuse. Nor does it include many of the hidden homeless who are sleeping on sofas in overcrowded conditions. read full story / add a comment

In the face of the worst housing crisis since rackrenting of the 19 th century why is Irish society so hung up on cement houses that resemble bunkers.There are numerous alternatives to cement and concrete and most western countries and developing world universities are exploring and investing in education for engineering and architectural studies called biotecture and geotecture knowledge transfer degrees read full story / add a comment

Stephen Donnelly, Independent TD for Wicklow and East Carlow has raised serious concerns that changes announced in this month’s Finance Bill will lead to large domestic and foreign commercial landlords operating completely tax free in Ireland. Cllr Paul Donnelly (SF) has welcomed the establishment of the Tyrrelstown Tenants Action Group after a meeting in the Tyrrelstown Educate Together School. The action group agreed to hold a demonstration outside the Dáil next Tuesday, 22nd March. ROPES is a literary journal produced by the students of the MA in Literature and Publishing at NUI Galway. The theme of the journal this year is independence, and the ROPES team is seeking poetry, prose and artwork submissions that explore gaining, losing, rejecting and sustaining independence. ROPES 2016 will be the journal?s 24th volume and is due out in spring 2016.The journal is entirely self-funded, and to cover the production costs the young publishers behind ROPES are seeking to raise €1,500 through the Ireland-based crowdfunding website Fund It. read full story / add a comment
