The National Concert Hall was a hive of activity yesterday evening long before the symphony concert began at 8.00 p.m. Lyric FM were ensconced in the foyer with some kind of panel connected with a composers' congress which had been taking place in Dublin. I did not get involved in listening because I was in an upstairs room with a few dozen other punters listening to the pre-concert talk. Composer Gerald Barry created a great centre of attention at the talk and around the foyer afterwards and later he took a bow on stage at the end of the Irish premiére concert performance of his opera, La Plus Forte, 2006. A very interesting and talented man who has already achieved a lot he may go on to produce even greater work. He was born, according to the program, in 1952. read full story / add a comment

Shannon was very quiet this morning with very few "civilian" passengers. Just a few Ryanair jets and even less Aer Lingus, now that they decamped to Belfast. Much of the business at Shannon was breaching Irish neutrality. More importantly, the CIA and military use of Shannon this morning was directly complicit in breaches of the UN Convention against Torture and international laws including the Geneva Conventions on War. read full story / add a comment

One of the arguments for the way Shell want to operate the Corrib gas field has always been that using a production pipeline/ onshore refinery would limit the need for helicopter flights for workers. Flights to and from offshore rigs are said to be dangerous. Local people have always countered that there was an element of choice in working for Shell, while they had no choice about living next to a high pressure production pipeline. Now however, the director of air safety for Shell has said that helicopter flights are not actually that dangerous at all. An examination of 2,000 helicopter accidents has shown that it was poor air safety systems that were the problem, and the majority of accidents could have been prevented by following more stringent procedures. read full story / add a comment

Limerick City Council claim signs erected by the Lisbon Campaign for Middle East Justice and Peace (LCMEJP) were an "incitement" The Council removed at least 5 large "No to Lisbon" referendum signs from locations around the city between the 26th May and the 11th June without informing anyone. Gardai in Henry st., Roxboro and Mary St. stations have been investigating this matter for over four weeks. The story was covered in the Limerick Leader two weeks in a row and in the Limerick Independent and the Irish Times but Council officials never thought it appropriate to contact the Gardai, LCMEJP or the printers event though contact details were on the signs. read full story / add a comment

in Dublin city centre particularly in the last few days. people aren't just saying they're voting No they're vehemently No and they're saying we could win this ...A lot of people have stopped by the CAEUC stall at the GPO to chat and debate, farmers, fishermen, taxi drivers, disgruntled fiannna failers etc. etc. really varied. it's amazing to hear people talking about politics like this, not just the treaty but the EU and where it's going. it feels like people are really getting into this. read full story / add a comment

A photo-review of WSM activities in Munster cities during the Lisbon referendum campaign. The Cork WSM branch, with the help of other comrades from Limerick and Dublin, did 4 info stalls on the streets of Cork, Limerick and Waterford as part of our campaign activities. Each was blessed with good sunny weather and a public mood in some sympathy with our anarchist vote No message. We gave out thousands of leaflets, and made new contacts across the cities. It was also good to see what other campaigns were active on the ground across Munster. read full story / add a comment

The Department of Agriculture is currently drafting legislation to update the Animal Welfare Bill, which will be brought to the Government for approval in the coming months. Although the summary draft of the bill focuses primarily on aspects of farming, such as the control and eradication of animal diseases, and the slaughter and disposal of animals/animal by-products, it also seeks to update the Protection of Animals Act 1911 on cruelty-related offences. It will also include provisions to deal with inspections for specified animals and the conditions in which they are kept (for example, pet shops). read full story / add a comment
