It is time for a full, frank and honest debate about USI ; both the future of the organisation itself, and more locally, UCDSU’s continued involvement within its structures. Serious questions are being asked about the direction of USI and whether UCDSU is a union that wishes to remain associated with that direction. read full story / add a comment

The bad news is that , a high school teacher in the Saudi town of Ein Al-Juwa, has been sentenced to three years in jail and 750 lashes to be administered in a public market. His crime, as reported by the Saudi daily Al-Madina, is “mocking religion,” or, specifically, discussing the Bible and praising Jews. Al-Harbi was taken to court for these transgressions by students and colleagues at his school. read full story / add a comment

It has been long observed that people for some reason on their non-banking days readily absorb shite about Dangerous Places, Famous People, Sensible Saving Options, Holidays, Interesting facts, Sport results, Media, gardening and health as well looking ahead at “opinion polls” and looking back at "how history was made".

Here are three dates-
july 27th 1968,
August 29th 1975
Nov 20th 1975

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the last "one".
It also marks the 60th anniversary of the Nuremburg trials.

The recent spate of sectarian attacks in villages in Antrim and elsewhere are obviously not a reaction to the IRA as there is no longer anything resembling a war going on. In fact they are a product of the sectarianism deeply embedded in northern society. They're a product of hundreds of years of cynical use of same to maintain the privilge and position of the ruling class. read full story / add a comment

This year, 18 people are dead, and so many friends, family and people are affected. Last year, it was 8 deaths in a turf war. The turf war is territory and the war relates to the sale of illegal drugs that destroy peoples' lives.

I believe in everybody having a degree of self reliance in and input to halting this plague of mind distortion so called pleasure.

The articles in New Scientist are worth a read. This week's article is second from the bottom.....the title is what motivates me to write, the remainder of my comment is about contextualising the effects of drugs on long term and health and in particular the consequences of mental health problems as a direct consequence of addiction. Let the children know. Why don't we have some for of game that shows you how unpleasant it is when your mind goes ary.....

36 days to go, and I'm sure many of the readers are like my good self, drawing up the list for Christmas Cards 2005.

I enjoy these gradually shortening days and evenings as Winter comes on. The garden becomes more manageable, all the roses are pruned, and flower beds have been dug, I find more time to relax and draw up the list.

Of course at this time of year it may number some thousands of names, and then the fun bit comes-

Crossing off the names. It is my annual project to "not send" christmas cards to many thousands of people, from both public and private life. & I have noted that they don't send me one either. read full story / add a comment

According to the Dáil Report in The Irish Times on Friday 11 November, the Taoiseach said: “Human Rights Watch went on to say that it was highly unlikely that this type of clandestine activity [i.e. the CIA's extraordinary renditions] would operate out of a major civilian airport.”

On this basis, we are to be reassured that we do not need to search US aircraft landing at Shannon.

In a letter to the Taoiseach, I quote reports from mainstream media sources of CIA aircraft operating its extraordinary abuses out of the following major civilian airports: Bromma (aka Stockholm City Airport), Dulles (Washington), Prestwick (Glasgow), Queen Alia (Amman) and Kastrup (Copenhagen).

If all of these airports have been used and abused, then why not Shannon? read full story / add a comment

This week the heirarchy of the Roman Catholic Church and its secular powerbase popped up on my radar twice.

The Ferns reports was published in Ireland, and the PD Liz O'Donnell TD is to be congratulated on her little speech, which though bitchy did get the point accross.

The Spanish heirarchy meanwhile has spent the last weeks pumping up its fans for a march against the Socialists plans for education reform today in Madrid which is to "draw a million". Its the return match after the Bishops drew a million to oppose gay marriage.

Two traditionally catholic states who have only recently experienced prosperity, and begun the development of socially open and secular societies dealing with "much the same" problems.
