The Guardian carries a quiet little story about how one of the UK soldiers being court martialled over abuse of Iraqi prisoners admits to being "ashamed". This trial supposedly arose out of the discovery of "disturbing" photographs by a woman working in a photo-processing laboratory. The soldiers are said to have (besides beating the prisoners) have forced their prisoners to simulate anal and oral sex. read full story / add a comment

PSNI blunder caused collapse of case against senior Orangeman A PSNI paperwork blunder led to the collapse of public order case against a senior Orangeman, according to a report by the Police Ombudsman, Nuala O'Loan. The PSNI had recommended that charges be levelled against the man after a controversial Orange Order march through the so-called "peaceline" in west Belfast in 2003. The marchers had ignored a Parades Commission ruling banning them from flying paramilitary regalia and playing sectarian music. In her report into the matter, Ms O'Loan said a combination of human error and computer mistakes had caused the case against the Orangeman to collapse. She called for procedural improvements to ensure there is no repeat of the blunder, but did not recommend disciplinary action and said there was no evidence of any criminal activity by the police. read full story / add a comment

Not just in Ireland, across the water the image of the friendly bobby is also taking a bashing. What makes this case different is that it doesnt just hinge on the question of individuals being assaulted by the police; it also takes the form of an action over breach of Civil Liberties. The police intend to call Ken Livingston (in his capacity as mayor of London) as a witness. I await his testimony with bated breath. pat c (Story below) read full story / add a comment

Pius XII was pontiff, bishop of rome, secular head of the Roman Catholic Church, pope, head of the Holy See, and as such signed the diplomatic agreement with Mussolini ending a very long conflict over the territorial integrity of the Vatican and establishing it as a state, and as Pope did not call attention to the Shoah. Pius XII is currently being discussed for canonization by which he would be declared a Saint. read full story / add a comment |
