Leonard Peltier is a Native American serving his 36th year in prison.

The events that led to arrest and the falsification of evidence used to convict him have long been highlighted by award winning films like Michael Apted's "Incident at Oglala" and best selling books such as Peter Matthiessen's "In the Spirit of Crazy Horse".

Leonard is an example of how a person can be imprisoned but not broken. His struggle is compared to Nelson Mandela's and his message is also one of hope. His prison writings are full of love and belief that his people are stronger than the miserable conditions they fine themselves on the reservation or the poverty many of them find them in cities.

Despite his ailing health and diminishing eyesight, Leonard is still a inspirational leader to Native Americans generally and his own Lakota people particularly.

Make your voice heard against war and repression, urges Hands Off the People of Iran chair, Yassamine Mather

The war drums against Iran are beating ever louder. The new embargo on Iranian oil, to come into force on July 1, is only the latest in a long list of measures imposed by US and EU imperialism. It bans all new oil contracts with Iran, and cuts off all existing deals. Also, all of the Iranian central bank’s European assets are to be frozen.

We are told that the sanctions are designed to weaken the regime and “force Iran back to the negotiating table” over its nuclear programme. This is clearly nonsense:

In reality, the ‘nuclear danger’ is used by imperialism as an excuse to deal with an increasingly unstable situation in the Middle East. Imperialism has recently lost a number of friendly regimes in the region (like Egypt) and needs to reassert control in this oil-rich area. War is also a useful distraction from economic misery and the current crisis of capitalism. read full story / add a comment

Matt Lygate the Scottish Socialist Republican has died. Here is an obituary.Matt was a believer, not just in Socialism but also in Christianity. If there is an afterlife then he has gone to join John Maclean and James Connolly. Full text at link.

Born on 26/12/1938 in Govan Glasgow. From early on,Matt became an accomplished artist, orator, and thinker. He always loved the great outdoors and would often dissapear for hours up hills and down gullies. As a teenager, he moved to Sunderland with his family and became one of the best renouned tailor’s cutters of his time. When ordered to join the British Army (conscription was still in place even after the war), Matt, like his father during WWI, refused stating he would never join an imperialist British Army. That same week, he was on a boat to New Zealand before the powers that be could abscond him. Matt had been an avid member of the CPGB as well as a devout Christian, believing that Christ himself was a revolutionary socialist. read full story / add a comment

INTERVIEW: Sunny Jacobs and Peter Pringle were both handed down the death penalty after being convicted of murders they did not commit. LORNA SIGGINS hears how they met the challenge and how the experience led them to each other

WHEN SUNNY JACOBS was in solitary confinement in a US correctional institution, having had a death sentence converted to life imprisonment, she relied on her creativity to keep her sanity. In imagining many things – prison guards as her servants, for instance, and no bills to pay – she never once dreamed she would feature in the weddings section of the New York Times. read full story / add a comment
