Dave Lordan writes in The Electronic Intifada on why he is taking part in the Cultural Boycott of Israel. Full text at link. I am proud to be among the many Irish and Ireland-based artists from across creative disciplines who have chosen to publicly support the growing campaign of boycott against apartheid Israel. Compared to the imprisoned Palestinian people themselves and to those taking part in flotillas and other perilous anti-apartheid activities in Palestine our contribution and risk may be justly considered small. At most we might lose the chance of lucrative invitations to read, perform or display our works in parts of the US where apartheid Israel's supporters hold the power of censorship. Departments of foreign affairs and ministries of culture may also not include us among those artists they can rely upon to project a lying image of a harmonious, bon vivant and, above all, harmlessly apolitical intelligentsia. We are sure to be slandered and ridiculed by the hired bullies of the global media empires. read full story / add a comment

Before FAS existed ,there were training agencies in ireland such as MANPOWER AND ADCO..They were services that worked for the people and not for the purposes of furnishing their greens(euro).. For example,300 people may be required for employment in a warehouse in cork and they would, have people working for manpower and adco, who have the necessary skills to train them, most would have 10+ years experience in a factory setting.. read full story / add a comment

The Galway Alliance Against War has written to progressive organisations throughout the country asking them to become involved in the campaign to stop the mass murderer Tony Blair coming to Ireland to kick off the world promotion of his memoir. On the 4th September Blair is to conduct a book-signing in Eason’s O’Connell St Dublin from 11am-1pm. And the previous evening he is due to appear on RTE’s Late Late Show. GAAW intends to begin picketing the local Branch of Eason’s in Galway from this Thursday lunchtime in protest and is asking other groups around the country to hold protests outside Eason’s stores. The Galway Alliance Against War is of the view that Eason’s and RTE can be forced to rescind their invitations to this man who is directly responsible for the deaths of more than 1.3 million Iraqis. read full story / add a comment

Mustafa Barghouti MP writes about the pressure that once again is being imposed on the palestinian people to enter into so called Peace Talks. Dr Barghouti believes that such talks without a clear agenda, timetable or without a binding mechanism for implementation will result in a betrayal of the Palestinian People. Full article at link. We have followed with great concern the increasing external pressure, especially from the U.S. and Israel, on the PLO leadership to shift from indirect negotiations (which have not resulted in any progress) to direct negotiations without clear and binding terms of reference regarding a complete halt of all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory - including in Jerusalem. read full story / add a comment

FAS complaints of abuse and mismanagement, are at an all time high, FAS registered employees has risen by nearly 50 pc. Staffing levels to cope with this has only risen by 5 pc. FAS in recent years has come under attack, due to media reports, including recent documentation on fas activity in Castlebar and other towns across Ireland.. They even recieved funding for a FAS space project!! which has nothing to do with increasing job prospects for the unemployed of Ireland. read full story / add a comment

Nicolas Sarkozy's presidential decree ordering the expulsion of Roma gypsies from the French state is currently being carried out. It marks another milestone on an age old road of antiziganism (the hostility, prejudice or racism directed at the Roma / Romani people, also known gypsies or Romanian gypsies. An age old road tread in Europe which has not yet brought them early 20th century literacy rates. An age old road which has seen them pass & passed through camps, squatted sites, the Holocaust, forced sterilization & in this age of Facebook Ryanair globalisation their prettiest children have become the fodder for 21st century sexual slavery. read full story / add a comment |
