Last Thursday, 20th August to an eager audience in an overbrimming room of the Imperial Hotel, Eyre Square, Galway, with contributions from Jenny Graham, Susan Johnson and Derek Graham, husband of Jenny gave harrowing eyewitness accounts of the Israeli/US/EU created hell on earth that is called Gaza, in the case of Derek Graham, he told his story about being kidnapped at gunpoint in Mediterranean international waters along with 20 other Free Gaza Movement human rights activists, on board the Spirit of Humanity on a voyage of mercy,, forced into the Israeli port of Ashdod and then in tune with the Kafkaesque perversion and inversion of morality and reality that is the hallmark of Zionism, bizarrely questioned for violating Israeli territorial waters. read full story / add a comment

The dispute at MTL is escalating with hundreds of people taking part in demonstrations organised by the Port Workers Support Group. SIPTU members at the MTL depot in Dublin Port have been on strike since the beginning of July, resisting forced redundancies and pay cuts. The company shipped in scabs from the North and Britain on day one to steal the dockers’ jobs, and also got a High Court injunction preventing effective picketing. On Saturday August 22nd members of IFPAL (Irish Friends of Palestine Against Lisbon) and Free Palestine Campaign spent 10 hours on the streets of Galway city providing information on why IFPAL is calling for a No vote in the Lisbon referendum as a protest against the EU's support for Israel's crimes against the Palestinian people. Almost 1000 leaflets were distributed to passersby, who were mostly supportive. The demonstration was joined in solidarity by a stalwart of the Shell to Sea Campaign, Naoise Ó Mongáin. read full story / add a comment

Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin protested today against the arrival of the British naval vessel the HMS Mersey (P283) in Dublin Port. The vessel, which is armed with a 20mm cannon and two machine guns arrived in Dublin yesterday morning and is due to leave on Thursday at 0600. Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson Daithi Byrne said; ''This ship is representative of the same navy that is responsible for occupation and oppression across the globe. We are here today to tell the British Navy that there are not welcome in Ireland and to show our opposition to the display of British force. The open arm welcoming of this ship by the Government is insensitive and unacceptable.'' read full story / add a comment

Ireland has some of the world’s most important bogs. Peatlands comprise almost a fifth of Ireland’s land cover, and lock away a massive 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon. They are also home to around half our endangered bird species and around a quarter of endangered plant species. Peat bogs are amazingly efficient carbon sponges. A healthy bog typically stores 10 times more carbon per hectare than any other system, including forests. Peatland protection, according to the UN Environment Programme is “among the most cost-effective options for mitigating climate change”. Damage to peat bogs is now producing the equivalent of over a tenth of total global fossil-fuel emissions. read full story / add a comment

Seomra Spraoi, Dublins Autonomous social centre (10 Belvidere Court, Dublin 1) will host a meeting for those interested in reigniting the passion for critical mass. Nurturing and reclaiming our city, our commons, our communities Community Gardens are emerging throughout Dublin city. These small projects have large narratives. When we create community gardens we build alternative ways that our cities operate and can be made sustainable. We build positive spaces, social spaces and community. We address land use, workers rights and learn to collectively organise. We seed save, skill share, reclaim lost knowledge and recycle. We re establish a relationship with the cycles of life, with nature and become aware of our deep connection to our environment and each other. Community Gardens are radical spaces and the good news is that they are on the increase. Over the last 10 years the destructive development of Ireland has been driven by economic greed with little thought for communities, nature and our collective future. Our ecological foot print increased dramatically. In 2006 we were top of the list on our rubbish per capita per year of 31 countries surveyed in the EU. A large crowd of 200-300, made up mainly of families and workers from North and South city dockland communities, showed their support for the sriking dockers today in Dublin. Marching from the East Wall/North Wall and Ringsend/Irishtown, the meeting point for the supporters was the Point Depot Bridge from where they marched united to the gates of the Marine Terminal Limited. read full story / add a comment

The Seomra Spraoi collective refused DIBC permission to use their space citing two political reasons for the refusal. The DIBC wrote to Seomra protesting the refusal and, a month later without reply, posted the letter on Indymedia, where it generated some comment, including one from Mark in which he attacked the publicising of the issue and made a number of allegations against the DIBC. read full story / add a comment

At 5 AM this morning, over 150 Garda took part in an opperation to remove Thomas Cook workers who had occupied the building.They sealed off the street, dragged peaceful demonstrators away from the front door,and smashed their way in with a battering ram. read full story / add a comment

On March 25th workers at Mr. Binman’s Carrick-on-Suir depot in Tipperary were called into a general meeting. The privatized bin company wanted pay cuts of 10% across the board from the workers. The following day workers were called one by one into management offices and told that for them, 10% would not be enough. Wage cuts of 20, 30, 40 or even 49% were demanded. In response, the workers organized a meeting of their own. They quickly learned that, not only were there different pay cuts for different workers – there was also different pay rates, different work hours and different conditions. They decided to fight these pay cuts, and get unionised, joining SIPTU. The company refused to recognize the union, or negotiate with them, and strike notice was served. read full story / add a comment |
