The media are quick report massacres in Syria. However when real State massacres of civilians take place in India you rarely hear anything. Full text at link. When we entered the village there was a solemn air about it. The only humans we saw there were some heavily armed paramilitary forces inside the bushes - they might have been from CoBRA force or CRPF. The men in arms averted our gaze. They couldn't meet our eye with the shadow of the dastardly act of a few days ago looming large over them. read full story / add a comment

On Wednesday 11th July 2012 further truths were revealed regarding endemic corruption in the planning process. The Mahon tribunal revelations were only the tip of the iceberg and did nothing to resolve some serious issues. Minister Phil Hogan has a lot of work to do to clean up the planning process. in fact the minister for justice will also need to make sweeping changes too. read full story / add a comment

The Italian High Court confirmed on Friday 13th July the sentences for the 10 activists on trial for crimes of “devastation and looting” during the G8 summit in Genoa in 2001. While some of the sentences have been slightly reduced, all 10 activists have been declared guilty of devastation and looting crimes against private property (for a little historical insight on this charge have a look at my previous article). read full story / add a comment

Out of the fog of misinformation the truth begins to emerge. Full text at link. Reports of scores of deaths in the Syrian village of Tremseh Thursday, in the course of violent clashes between government forces and opposition militia, have been seized upon by the United States and its allies to ramp up their campaign to overthrow the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. In a press statement issued Friday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asserted that the Syrian regime had carried out “yet another massacre,” claiming there was “indisputable evidence that the regime deliberately murdered innocent civilians.” read full story / add a comment

The Anonymous collective have launched a WikiLeaks-like site called Par:AnoIA (Potentially Alarming Research: Anonymous Intelligence Agency). They won't gather the data themselves but will take submissions. The project was created as a response to a year of Anonymous releases where the announcement of document dumps generated plenty of media, but the documents’ content got little coverage. “The reason no one cares about these leaks, as a general rule of thumb, is that they can’t do anything with [them],” said a Paranoia anon volunteering on document processing for the project in an online chat with Wired. “Basically, [we're] making it accessible to anyone that wants to do something with it, in a proper usable format.” read full story / add a comment

You see I’ve recently finished college and am quite eager to start work, which is supposedly what you and your fellow party members also want but I keep coming up against obstacles which have been put in place by you and your fellow party members. read full story / add a comment

Prisoners inGuantanamo who had been diagnosed with serious mental health problems and who were on psychoactive medications were continuously interrogated. Other prisoners were given drugs against their will. Full story at link. Prisoners inside the U.S. military’s detention center at Guantanamo Bay were forcibly given “mind altering drugs,” including being injected with a powerful anti-psychotic sedative used in psychiatric hospitals. Prisoners were often not told what medications they received, and were tricked into believing routine flu shots were truth serums. It’s a serious violation of medical ethics, made worse by the fact that the military continued to interrogate prisoners while they were doped on psychoactive chemicals. read full story / add a comment

Cutting rent supplement has allowed the FG/Labour government to continue to make large cuts to the social welfare budget whilst claiming not to be touching "basic social welfare rates". The reality is that because it is left to tenants to negotiate with their landlords for a rent reduction, rather than such negotiations being undertaken by the department itself, this is rather like David negotiating with goliath and the tenant inevitably has to pay the not inconsiderable difference out of their already reduced social welfare payment. read full story / add a comment

She is based in Argentina and works with the Latin America Regional Office of Church World Service. She has also written for the Irish Times on Paraguay and has extensive research on the impact of agribusiness on Paraguayan peasants' lives. She has been a long term supporter of LASC. The views expressed here are her own. We hope that this interview will give a better insight into the developments in that country. read full story / add a comment

On the 30th of June 2012, the Citizens Defence Committee held an extremely successful fundraising event in the Dublin Supporters Bar on Parnell Street. We got off to a great night with a fantastic performance from Irish ballad/folk music band, the Celtic Rebels, who gave it their all and graced us with a brilliant set of traditional Irish music, followed by an excellent rendition of popular Irish rebel songs. Both lads played beautifully and are to be highly recommended by the CDC! As the night went on and we reached the interval, the long anticipated draw took place. Among the top prizes was a pair of boxing gloves donated and signed by Anthony (The Pride) Fitzgerald, a rugby ball signed by members of the Irish rugby squad and a beautiful handcrafted bodhrán made by republican prisoners in Portlaoise Gaol. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to all of our comrades for donating the wonderful prizes! read full story / add a comment

Where is the UN? Where is Clinton? Where is NATO? Where are the Sanctions? Where are the international conferences in support of the Saudi Shia people? Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy, a dictatorship, but it doesn't bother those who are out destabilise Syria. Actually Saudi Arabia is arming and bankrolling the Syrian fundamentalists. Two men have been killed in Saudi Arabia during a protest against the arrest of a prominent Shia cleric. Activists said Akbar al-Shakuri and Mohammed al-Filfil were shot by police while attending a demonstration in Qatif, a city in Eastern Province. The interior ministry said there had been no clashes with police, and that the incident was being investigated. read full story / add a comment

After a 9-hour debate, the Italian Supreme Court has issued its final sentence against the 25 defendants – policemen and heads of security forces – responsible for the violence against the activists sleeping in the Diaz school during the G8 summit in Genoa in 2001. Result: most of the charges have been declared time-barred, leading to impunity for all the people involved. In the meantime, 10 activists are facing a total of 100 years of jail between themselves for crimes of “devastation and looting”. read full story / add a comment

“The greatest gift of the garden is the restoration of the five senses” – Hanna Rion Since the beginning of February 2012 the CDC along with residents from Tom Kelly Flats, set out to create a community garden for the area. Although at the time, we were entering into the unknown scene of gardening and were operating on an experimental and trial and error basis, we’re happy to announce that the initiative was a great success. Today (8/7/12) the CDC along with residents in Tom Kelly Flats began the first harvest of the community garden. Our first main crop to be harvested was our organic potatoes, we then harvested some of our organic vegetables as well. read full story / add a comment |
