The British state is slowly killing Julian Assange. They want him to die so as to send a message to anyone else who dares make public the crimes of governments like the US and the UK who have bombed countless countries, murdering hundreds of thousands of people in the process and which in fact has gone a long way to contributing to the waves of immigrants risking their lives to get into Europe. The World Socialist WebSite has produced a report on the situation so far. More than 65 eminent medical doctors from the UK and around the world have issued an open letter calling for urgent action to protect the life of imprisoned WikiLeaks founder and journalist Julian Assange. The doctors warn there may be serious consequences if Assange is not moved from Belmarsh Prison to a university teaching hospital where he can be assessed and treated by an expert medical team. read full story / add a comment

The Nevin Economic Research Institute (NERI) one of the few non right wing think tanks regularly produces interesting reports, research and other information. Information that is key to understanding what is happening in our society and how various socio economic factors are trending. In a recent "In Brief" four page report that they have done on work, they analysis the risk of poverty rates across the broad categories of employment in Ireland. One of it's key findings is that: deprivation rates are higher in 2017 than in the years leading up to the crisis, including for full-time, permanent staff. The analysis also shows that for all but one of the seven categories, Irish employees in 2017 were less likely to be able to meet an unexpected expense (of approximately €1,000) than before the financial crisis. read full story / add a comment

60,000 people have joined the Facebook group “Protest Against Homelessness in Ireland,” pledging to march on December 5th, 12pm at the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin. Here’s why you should join the protest. 1. Because the scenes of misery on our streets are getting worse by the day. 2. Because the government is not on our side. 3. Because we need real opposition. 4. Because we could end homelessness now. 5. Because this could kick the housing movement onto a new level. read full story / add a comment

The ongoing coup (via a Color Revolution) in Bolivia to overthrow the democratically elected government and clearly instigated by the US is yet another sad example of how the lives of millions of people are cynically destroyed. But an not so surprising fact has come to light. Bolivia has probably the worlds largest reserves of Lithium now the new "oil" of this age and President Morales recently signed an agreement with China to mine this. This is the reason the US has struck now. Here is a report from RT on the ongoing situation. Questions remain about the circumstances that led to Morales’ ouster, and whether foreign governments played a role in it. But recent history provides reason to suspect that Bolivia’s rich natural resources are part of the answer. ... read full story / add a comment

Poetry is often associated with genteel people and laid-back lifestyles, yet over the decades since the Enlightenment many poets have been actively involved in the most radical of political and art movements. Setting up a solid foundation for such attitudes was the poet extraordinaire, Alexander Pope. In this essay I shall look at the connection between poetry and socio-political struggles over the centuries. From Pope to the Chartists, and from the Irish revolutionary poets to the postcolonial writers writers of Africa, poetry has played an important part in social change. The recent explosion of global demonstrations and rallies has also been connectioned with radical poetry as will be seen in Chile for example. read full story / add a comment

A reactionary right wing coup has deposed Evo Morales, the left wing and self proclaimed socialist President of Bolivia, after 14 years of rule. This coup has been executed by the Bolivian armed forces and police in conjunction with the right wing opposition Citizens Community led by Carlos Mesa, probably with the backing, behind the scenes, of the far right Bolsonaro government in Brazil and the US State Department. read full story / add a comment

Industrial peat extraction at risk as EU Court triples fines requested by Commission Ongoing weekly fine of €100,005 by EU Court highlights ‘a matter of indisputable seriousness’ An angry European Court of Justice ruled today that Ireland’s conduct shows that it has ‘not acted in accordance with its duty of sincere cooperation to put an end to the failure to fulfil obligations’ under the EU Directive on Environmental Assessment. The Judgment arose out of the failure to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment for a windfarm in Derrybrien County Galway that led to a massive landslide on October 16, 2003 during which tonnes of peat were dislodged, polluting the Owendalulleegh River and killing 50,000 fish. read full story / add a comment

On Wednesday a Solidarity- People Before Profit Dáil motion will be debated to unblock over 50 opposition bills currently stuck in limbo because of the governments use of what is called ‘The Money Message’. The motion which will be debated in the Dáil on November 6th would change current standing orders that govern the progress of opposition bills. This motion will recognise the right of the Government of the day to have control, over the appropriation of public monies but it will stop the misuse of the constitutional clause that standing orders is based on. It will remove the use of incidental expenses and indirect costs of implementing a Bill from the reasons that the Government can impose a ‘Money Message’. read full story / add a comment

Councilors from Fianna Fail, Green Party, Labour and Social Democrats have agreed to give land at O Devaney Gardens to Bartra Capital. O Devaney Gardens was a working class flat complex on the edge of the Phoenix Park. For decades, it was run down by Dublin City Council and requests by tenants for proper maintenance were ignored. Dublin City Council officials typically neglect inner city housing complexes in the hope that they can eventually move out the residents and turn them into posh private apartments. The Fianna Fail-Green-Labour–Social Democrat coalition that run Dublin City Council complied with this disgraceful strategy. read full story / add a comment

In my view, we are in a period of transition from domination by collectives, with many women including feminists and radical Maori aligned with left so-called liberals (fake liberals) to the more independently-minded chosen according to merit. Independence of mind is truly hated in today's world..This article provides a brief description of my chapter on New Zealand in my recent book. NZ followed a UN agenda aiming for a decline in western culture and global freedom. read full story / add a comment

The Editor of Grayzone, Max Blumenthal was arrested over a week ago in Washington DC and was shackled by his hands and ankles for over five hours in one a cage along with other inmates over the weekend. His crime? To report from outside the Venezuelan embassy in Washington DC last May and to burst the US media bubble on how things really were in Venezuela after the US tried to organise a coup against the elected leader Maduro and install their own puppet who would sell out the country to vulture capitalists. What a surprise there was nothing about this in the mainstream media. If the same thing had happened in Venezuela there would have been widespread condemnation in the pro-coup mainstream media. The World Socialist website carried a report on it yesterday. read full story / add a comment |
