On Thursday, just after 10.30am, Limerick’s Congolese community along with Irish friends and supporters marched from Arthur’s Quay in the city centre, up O’Connell St., to O’Connell Avenue. There, a memorandum to the Irish Government and the International Community was read, calling their attention to the ongoing tragedy taking place in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It noted that over the last decade the world has allowed the deaths of 5 million people in Congo, and that in the eastern part of the country sexual abuse of women, forced recruitment of child soldiers and displacement from villages and homes are once again part of everyday life. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Why is Hidden History hiding ? Last evening, Tuesday, 25th November, I flicked through the TV listings for something worthwhile to watch. I came across a docudrama on RTE one at 10.15 pm. It was entitled, ‘DEATH OR CANADA’. I switched on RTE one at 10.15 and discovered that the docudrama was actually another of those terrible Hidden History programmes. I was surprised to see that it was Hidden History and though it unusual that it was not advertised as so on the TV listings. I immediately checked last Saturday’s Irish Times TV guide. The programme was listed on RTE at 10.15pm under the title DEATH OR CANADA, no mention of Hidden History. On the top of the page under the heading, TV CHOICE by David O Dwyer I see a review of the docudrama, it reads as follows. read full story / add a comment

The Moyross Residents’ Alliance is representative of both homeowners and tenants living in Moyross and was formed to ensure that all residents have their rights upheld during the regeneration process. The local regeneration committees seem to be failing in this regard and are not representing our views. So far over 140 households are affiliated, with more joining everyday. read full story / add a comment

The Minister has made a career out of stating the obvious but this time he has surpassed himself. While he accepts that the increased fuel bills are causing concern, the Minister then states that his colleague Mary Hanafin is monitoring the impact on pensioners. In fact there is no need to monitor anything – the price rises in both gas and electricity and in the basic cost of a bag of coal are breath-taking and will force many pensioners to go without adequate warmth this winter. A bag of coal is now eighteen euro. read full story / add a comment

On Thursday July 29th the HSE were presented with 5,000 signatures on petitions demanding the maintaining of A&E services in Ennis, Nenagh and St.John’s Hospitals. The Socialist Party, who collected the petitions, claim that this is only the beginning and that an active campaign must be built. Socialist Party spokesperson, Cian Prendiville said: “The HSE are unlikely to give up on their agenda of centralisation and cutbacks without a fight. Petitions can be a first step, but what is needed is for people to come along to the upcoming health forum on July 29th and use it as a launching pad for a local action group.” read full story / add a comment ![]()

Limerick City Council claim signs erected by the Lisbon Campaign for Middle East Justice and Peace (LCMEJP) were an "incitement" The Council removed at least 5 large "No to Lisbon" referendum signs from locations around the city between the 26th May and the 11th June without informing anyone. Gardai in Henry st., Roxboro and Mary St. stations have been investigating this matter for over four weeks. The story was covered in the Limerick Leader two weeks in a row and in the Limerick Independent and the Irish Times but Council officials never thought it appropriate to contact the Gardai, LCMEJP or the printers event though contact details were on the signs. read full story / add a comment |
