Very interesting discussion on Today PK (RTE Radio One) of how media misinformation, most of which originated during the 1981 H Block hunger strikes resurfaced during the release of state papers in 2012.
Allegations that:
- Bobby Sands told the Pope's representative that he would come off the hunger strike;
- that Raymond McCreesh's family forced him to remain on hunger strike;
- that the British agreed the substance of the prisoner's demands between the death of the fourth and fifth hunger striker;
are discussed, by journalist Eamon Mallie, historian Eamon Phoenix and 1981 prisoners' spokesperson Danny Morrison. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday saw the first disruption of Shell's work of the New Year with a quickly organised protest called for 10am outside Bellanaboy. Overall Shell's work yesterday was stopped for 2 hours and in a further protest today (Saturday), work was stopped for a further 2 & 1/2 hours. read full story / add a comment

AFAR offers to find ‘forever homes’ for condemned hens.
TEN farmers across the country say they will be forced to cull hundreds of thousands of hens next week to comply with an EU directive which the IFA claims could cost them their livelihoods. A directive issued back in 1999 to phase out so-called battery cages to house hens and replace them with a more humane version known as "enriched" cages has apparently led to this situation.
The Alliance for Animal Rights have already spoken to IFA National Poultry Chairman Mr Alo Mohan and have made an offer to find ‘forever homes’ for some of these hens to allow them live out their natural lives. read full story / add a comment

16 Catholic Workers closed and occupied the Main Entrance of Northwood Military Headquarters. The Irish government has been complicted in the murder of innocent people for almost a decade now via the wars of aggression in Afghanistan and Iraq. They are completely hypocritical when for so many years they condenmed the acts of murder in the North, but now not only remain slient about these mass murders in far off lands but actively support it through the apparatus of the state in the form of providing resources -Shannon Airport, policing to go with it and of course welcoming back in 2004 the war criminal Bush and more recently Obama. We are supposed to cheer when the US and NATO drop daisy-cutter 4,000 lb bombs or when drones fire missles and say oops! when innocent civilians get killed.
And to counter the propaganda spewed a few weeks ago about the so-called ending of the war in Iraq. It is not over. There are still troops there. And contary to statements at the time of only 64,000 killed as if that was just a few, the figure is well over one million people, as estimated by internationally peer reviewed Lancet study that was done twice to confirm the initial findings. We are so immersed in the propaganda that we have all forgotten our true values and the difference between right and wrong. Fortunately there are a few individuals willing to stick by their convinctions. Below we reproduce a handwritten communication we received from one of the members of the Peace Team that sabotaged a US troop transporter at Shannon warport last Tuesday morning, 20th December 2011. Marian Price from her prison cell says, Sinn Fein have approved her political internment without trial. "Sinn Féin might be hypocritical but I'm not. I wasn't having them shedding crocodile tears over my case to appease their grassroots. I'm in Maghaberry because Gerry Adams as OC of the Belfast Brigade sent me to bomb Britain in 1973 when I was 19. But then my memory must be deceiving me. A sketchy report on the Irish Anti-War Movement website states that a U.S. troop carrier plane was attacked and sabotaged at Shannon airport. From other sources I understand that that Omni used this aircraft as a spare and that was parked in a relatively remote area of the airport when disarmed a day or so ago by having its hydraulic or fuel lines severed. read full story / add a comment |
