From handing over the Chagos Islands to compensating Gerry Adams, Starmer's decisions owe more to human rights lawyers than sound politics. He needs to sack his chum Lord Hermer before he shipwrecks his Government.

Aisling Byrne writes about the US plans for regime change in Syria. Byrne is not a lackey of the Syrian regime, in this article she is critical of it and how it has handled the crisis. She worked in Syria and saw the Secret Police in action. But she says: what may have began as popular protests, initially focused on local issues and incidents (including the case of the torture of young boys in Dera'a by security forces) were rapidly hijacked by this wider strategic project for regime change.

"War with Iran is already here," wrote a leading Israeli commentator recently, describing "the combination of covert warfare and international pressure" being applied to Iran.

Although not mentioned, the "strategic prize" of the first stage of this war on Iran is Syria; the first campaign in a much wider sectarian power-bid. "Other than the collapse of the Islamic Republic itself," Saudi King Abdullah was reported to have said last summer, "nothing would weaken Iran more than losing Syria." [1]

European Union’s (EU) in-principle decision on Wednesday to impose an embargo on oil imports from Iran has further escalated the danger of military conflict in the Persian Gulf. The EU move dovetails with President Obama’s signing on Saturday of US legislation designed to cripple the Iranian banking system and cut the country’s oil exports. read full story / add a comment

“Do You Eat Carrots?”

Vegan Ireland asks Matt Cooper and Joe Duffy to go vegan

Recently both popular presenters made surprising statements about veganism on their radio shows.

For example, during discussions last Tuesday (3/1/12) about the recent Rachel Allen shooting pheasants issue, Matt stated that if he were a vegan he’d be starving, while Joe asked a vegan if he ate carrots and whether he’d be happy then if pheasants were captured and killed humanely. Discovering that vegans did not have milk from cows in their tea, Joe said, “Ah, mother of God, how do you survive?”

I'm shocked but not surprised to see yet another stealth tax by the Government this time on 115000 Pensioners who have their own as well as the State Pension. Many of them are now going to be up to €4400 per year for a single person or €8800 per year for a couple worse off because they'll now be paying tax on their Pensions which they worked hard for all their lives. Why don't the Revenue Commissioners go after all the big tax evaders instead of vulnerable and soft targets like the Pensioners? Not that the Pensioners will be a pushover as they showed a few years ago when they resisted the Government's attack on their Medical Cards. read full story / add a comment

An issue that dwarfs in death and suffering the murders of 911 that you will not hear politicians debating or newspapers or news broadcasts covering is that one human being is dying every nine second from starvation in the world as it is presently spiritually, politically and economically organized. One person dies every nine seconds from starvation in a world that produces 3,500 calories per person per day and 4.2 pounds of food per person per day. That is premeditated, intentional, unjustified homicidal violence, murder. That is the warring of one group or class or cast of human beings against another. That is class warfare of the most hideous kind—class genocide. Yet, not a peep, let alone an impassioned daily outcry, from those who own the microphones and those who are granted access to them. Why? Do some human beings have worth, count, and others not? read full story / add a comment

President Barack Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into law on New Year’s Eve. The bill provides a massive $662 billion for the US war machine and makes unprecedented inroads into democratic rights, authorizing the US military to seize individuals anywhere in the world and hold them in a military detention facility indefinitely, without a trial or any other legal recourse. read full story / add a comment

The coming year will be a challenging one for working-class people in Ireland and across Europe. The threats facing us are manifold. Economically people are faced with the consequences of the austerity programme imposed on them by the EU political and financial elite. For Irish Republicans increasing repression highlights the reality of the old imperialism of British rule in Ireland. read full story / add a comment
