On Tuesday's issue of the Derry Journal, the newspapers editor highlighted the city's 2013 bid to make Derry the Culture Capital of the North. Whatever peoples views on the issues surrounding Derry's 2013 'cultural bid', in the article itself the editor published an image of the model Donna Feldman poising as a giant in her underwear at under Ferryquay Gate. read full story / add a comment

The report launched today is the result of an investigation into the reality of abortion in Ireland, which was carried out in 2009. The report examines the real effects of Ireland's restrictive and often unclear abortion laws on women in crisis pregnancy and highlights the increased burdens placed on women forced to leave the state to access medical care. Commenting, Spokesperson Sinead Ahern said “In the 27 years since the 8th amendment we have criminalised and stigmatised women in crisis. We have not stopped abortion happening; we have simply driven it abroad or underground. It is time that we discuss the issue of abortion in Ireland in terms of the reality and not geography. Discriminating, unfair and harmful treatment of intersexed athletes ("hermaphrodites") in women's sports has a long and painful history. The "suspected" athletes' dignity and human rights keep getting violated on a regular basis by both of the ruling international sports bodies, the International Olympics Committee (IOC) and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), as well as by their subsidiaries and affiliates. Until today, the governing bodies keep on denying their responsibilities and refusing dialogue, as well as seemingly reacting only when forced by public pressure, and if so pro forma only. Case in point: The IOC's attitude with regards to their syposium on "'ambiguous' gender cases" ending in Miami today. read full story / add a comment

Houzan Mahmoud of the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq, speaks of how the Imperialist invasion and occupation of Iraq has affected women, forcing many into sexual-slavery. Along with Nadya Khalife of HRW Houzan was interviewed by Rachelle Kliger of The Media Line. Full text at link. Houzan said that since 2003 more than 70% of Iraqis have lost their jobs, a situation compounded by a lack of welfare provisions. “We have more than four million widows in Iraq… who will provide for these women? The situation created absolute poverty, particularly for women, and these women have virtually no other option but to turn to prostitution. There’s nothing called choice in this,” she stressed. “They are either being forced into it because of the economic and political situation or because of a lack of security, whereby women and young girls are being kidnapped.” read full story / add a comment

The Civil Partnership Train is a civil rights initiative inspired by the landmark Belfast to Dublin ‘Contraceptive train’ of 1971 and the historic ‘Peace train’ of 1989. According to Dr Richard O’Leary of the Civil Partnership Train “The purpose of the Civil Partnership Train is to highlight the second class legal status of gay and lesbian couples in Dublin compared to Belfast, a situation which will continue unless the Irish government’s Civil Partnership Bill is upgraded”. Today's (October 16th) edition of the English newspaper "The Daily Mail" carried an opinion piece by the English journalist Jan Moir. The homophobia and inherent hatred voiced in the article led to an extraordinary amount of comments on that newspaper's website which together with reaction from other newspapers saw the title of the article changed by mid afternoon. By late afternoon an internet campaign had begun to pressure advertisers who use the Daily Mail to cut their support. The loss of revenue to the English newspaper might be the most serious blow to its editorial policy of articulating and pandering to middle English prejudice ever. As such the article which prompted this reaction merits archiving. read full story / add a comment

Certain criticisms of Michelle Obama have been doing the rounds of MSM because she did not allow a grappler within arm's length. Q: Should she hide her distaste and allow a known grappler and sexist give her a hug? A: Why did the Telegraph even ask that stupid question? Back to time honoured sexism , where a Premier who is immune from prosecution, has a mountain of sleaze behind him and caused an odd reaction in the wife of the US prez gets defended in the Media because Mrs Obama did not *want* to hug him. It is of course all her fault and nothing to do with the manner in which he greeted her. Fundraiser for Keeping Mum, Community Art Project, Ennis. Co. Clare Project will be exhibited at the Home Birth Conference on October 3rd in Dublin and will travel to York University, Toronto, Canada later in October to be exhibited at ARM (Association for Research on Mothering) Annual conference. Demonstrators arrested in the recent uprisings, particularly those in Kahrizak Prison have been gang-raped and the prison guards have put them under medieval tortures. Many of the detainees, female or male, have died in rape rooms as a result of being repeatedly raped, due to rupture of uterus or rectum and intestinal bleeding. Still others, in or out of prison, are suffering from the resulting physical and psychological traumas of these acts of violence. We know that the torture and raping of prisoners are not confined to Kahrizak and to the recent events. Executions and murder of prisoners, rape and torture in the Islamic regime’s prisons are as old the regime itself. read full story / add a comment

Amnesty reports on the situation in Nicaragua where pregnant women are being refused necessary medical treatment. This has led to an increase in maternal deaths. Full story at link. Nicaragua’s total ban on abortions is endangering the lives of girls and women, denying them life-saving treatment, preventing health professionals from practicing effective medicine and contributing to an increase in maternal deaths across the country, concludes Amnesty International in a new report issues on Monday. According to official figures, 33 girls and women have died in pregnancy this year as compared to 20 in the same period last year. Amnesty International believes these figures are only a minimum as the government itself has acknowledged that the number of maternal deaths is under-recorded. read full story / add a comment

This is the story of the rape and murder of another young Iranian who was protesting for justice. Full story at link. On Friday June 19, a large group of mourners gathered at the Ghoba mosque in Tehran to await a speech about the martyrs of the post-election protests by presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi. According to one Iranian blog, 28-year-old Taraneh Mousavi was one of a group of people that was arrested by plainclothesed security forces for attending the gathering. Weeks later her mother received an anonymous call from a government agent saying that her daughter has been hospitalized in Imam Khomeini Hospital in the city of Karaj, just north of Tehran -- hospitalized for "rupturing of her womb and anus in... an unfortunate accident". read full story / add a comment |
