A politics.ie poster has retrieved the text of a House of Lords debate from Hansard in which Kinnock says the guarantees are not legally binding. The whole yes camp are caught with trousers down by their ankles! Here's what she said: "Those guarantees do not change the Lisbon treaty; the European Council conclusions are very clear on them. The Lisbon treaty, as debated and decided by our Parliament, will not be changed and, on the basis of these guarantees, Ireland will proceed to have a second referendum in October." She added: "Nothing in the treaty will change and nothing in the guarantees will change the treaty as your Lordships agreed it." read full story / add a comment

Yesterday in Westport District Court, Judge Mary Devins issued a bench warrant for a Shell to Sea protestor, who was appearing in the High Court, appealing his remanding in custody at the same time. While the Gardaí in Westport didn't seek to have the bench warrant issued and informed the court that protestor Eoin Lawless was appearing in the High Court at that time, Judge Devins insisted upon issuing a bench warrant. read full story / add a comment

This is the story of an 18 year old protester who was arrested, beaten and raped. It more than just a description of brutsality, this story gets to the heart of the matter. Full story at the url. His shoulder blades and arms were wounded. There were some slashes on the face. No bone fractures, but he was bruised all over the body. I wanted to take some photos but he did not let me. The doctor said only four of his teeth were intact, the rest were broken. You could hardly understand what he said. Then the doctor told me what had happened. He had suffered rupture of the rectum and the doctor feared colonic bleeding. He suggested we take him to the hospital immediately. read full story / add a comment

Despite the brutality of Iran’s Islamic regime, protests continued in Tehran and many other cities two weeks after the upsurge began. They are on a much smaller scale than the first days, but it is extremely significant and inspiring that many youth and other people are determined to persist even in the face of gunfire, beatings, arrest and possibly torture. They are expressions of a broader popular rage that will not be easily quenched. read full story / add a comment

This analysis of the recent Red Cross Gaza report into the 22 day Israeli war (Jan '09) will be split into two parts. Only by understanding the extenuating circumstances that 1.4-1.5 million imprisoned people were subject too prior to the 22 day onslaught, can we fully comprehend it’s aftermath. The capture by the Israeli navy of the boat "The Spirit of Humanity" in international waters adds piracy to the list of crimes perpetrated by the rogue Zionist state. The boat was bringing a largely symbolic cargo of humanitarian goods to the people of Gaza - medicines, toys, cement for rebuilding of homes destroyed by Israel during its latest murderous assault on Gaza. Its crew included an Irish first mate, Derek Graham from County Mayo, and its passengers included the Irish Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire and the former US presidential candidate and Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. read full story / add a comment |
