About 300 people marched on Saturday afternoon in protest at the ongoing stand-off over the bin tax and the non-collection of domestic rubbish in Cork City. The noisy and lively march was harassed throughout by motorcycle cops who insisted on running normal traffic though the streets at the same time as the march was in progress. The march finished in Daunt Square where it was addressed by an Sandra Condon, an activist with Householders Against Service Charges (HASC) who was jailed in 2001 for opposing Cork City Councils' policies. A number of recently elected city-councillors also spoke. read full story / add a comment

The High Court this morning ruled in favour of a case appealed from the
Circuit Court on behalf of the Dublin City Campaign Against the Bin Tax.
In this landmark case, Justice Lindsay found that the City Council illegally
applied bin charges for the years 2001/2002, on the basis that they defied

The Council of Dublin City voted tonight to pass the Estimates, with a minor amendment from FF by 32 votes to 15. The Estimates were supported by Labour, FG and FF councillors.

Those who voted against were Sinn Fein (10) the Independents (3) and two others believed to be one Labour (Eric Byrne) and one FG.

UP TO 2,000 elderly citizens in Limerick will be forced to pay for their refuse collection for the first time next year following the axing of a waiver system.

The Irish Independent has learned that the city manager has received legal opinion that the waiver scheme is not legally grounded.

Since the privatisation of the refuse collection in Limerick over two years ago, the local authority had been paying up to €200,000 per annum to waste collectors. The subvention is, however, set to be terminated from the end of this year. More than 2,000 now face charges of €320 per annum. read full story / add a comment

The All Dublin Anti BIn tax Campaign is holding a protest at City Hall, at 6.15pm on Monday 29th as the councillors begin their debate on this years estimate's which include an €80 basic bin charge and €5 per lift charge. Keep the pressure on the councillors: the three independents and SF are committed to voting against the bin tax, if Labour vote against the estimates will fall. read full story / add a comment
